i shot some footage in the letterbox format which looks fine on my FCP and AE windows, but when i am looking at it on an external monitor, it looks like it is stretched a bit. any help?

Was this shot with a DVX100A or B? I'm just wondering if you may have shot in squeeze mode. Letterbox footage is no different than regular footage except it has black bars at the top and bottom. Capture some non-letterboxed footage and see if it still looks stretched. If it doesn't then it seems as though it might have been shot in squeeze mode, or possibly altered along the way during editing.
Agreed. If you have a full screen image on your external monitor and it looks stretched, sounds like you shot in squeeze mode.
If this is the case, you can treat the project as Widescreen 16:9 and output to DVD which will automatically rescale for you, or rescale the footage in AE (for example) and render out a true 4:3 letterboxed image.
