Letterbox + Crop in Post

I have read that it is better to letterbox in camera unless you may need to reframe in post. my question is...would it be okay to letterbox in camera as a guide and then crop even more in post?? would placing the 16X9 mask in post over a letterboxed image effect the image quality?? thanks.
 
Yes. You can Letterbox in camera and then apply a mask in post of the same size or even smaller (1:85 or 2:35 for example). No it will not degrade the image.

However; shooting 4:3 will save you some potential headaches on post. I encourage you to use this method; you'll get used to it. You can even use a Dry Erase or Tape or any other marker for guides if that makes you feel a bit more comfortable.
