Letter box vs 16x9

The letter box in 480i is different in size from the 16x9 in the 720 and 1080 mode. When i download the effects that i shot at 720 to dv tape in camera the playback indicates that the image is squeezed. Auto iris is very slow to respond. The iris control overides auto iris to a certain degree so how can i put auto iris in its ideal or detent setting?
 
Off is the ideal setting for auto iris. Manually controlling iris is almost ALWAYS the way to go.

It's not letterbox Vx 16x9, it's letterbox Vs. anamorphic. Both of them are 16x9 aspect ratio. Letterbox puts bars on the top and bottom of the image, while anamorphic squeezes the image, so when displayed on a 16x9 TV is looks right.
