FS7: Let's Talk LUTs

Pro Tip:

If you are shooting Slog and monitoring with a custom or REC709 VF LUT and you want to quickly see Slog waveform just press the S&Q button, voila. I find a quick check of Slog waveform for clipping before rolling is all I need.
.

Thats a good tim. I didn't even think of doing that and its like a lut on/off button almost. I've been using the hi/lo function to peak at the underlying slog but always went 4 clicks in to the user menu to turn the lut off and on to check waveform.

I know, but the waveform only displays the LUT output not the underlying SLog3 signal, if you want to see the SLog3 waveform pressing the S&Q button for a quick peek is a nifty workaround.

I am still unable to have that on my FS7 (v3.0). I check my hdmi config, but to no avail. How do you guys do that ?

MonitorLUT menu:

SDI 2 On
VF On

Output On/Off
SDI On

Output Display
SDI2 On

I think this is what you need to get the Waveform up. I'm sure there will be others ready to correct me if I'm wrong. I have had a situation where The waveforms stopped appearing even though I hadn't made any settings change and I had to turn off all the LUTs in the Monitor LUT menu and reinstate SDI2 and VF Out and the waveform returned.

I hope that helps.

Obviously when you use the S&Q trick to view the SLog3 waveform the S&Q shutter setting have to be the same as normal mode i.e if S&Q is in HFR mode you won't see the correct exposure info.

From what I recall on FS7 you can't have waveform unless ALL luts are on, or ALL off. And HDMI can't be set to 4K output. Has to be HD with letterbox I think.

Hope this helps. Sorry it's been a while since I shot with FS7.

It's virtually impossible to screw up exposure on the stock FS7.

Not if you set your shutter in degrees as the exposure and therefore WFM will change. Won't work if you use HFR either. Agree, you have to be a muppet to screw-up exposure on the FS7.

The tip presupposes you aren't a c*nt.

Hi there
As promised, I'm posting back.

I really struggled to see the wfm witout the lut on the internal recording, but thanks to you I finally managed. The camera seems a littl buggy and sometimes you have to reboot or to switch back and forth some menu in order to have the wfm. I recorded all my settings on a sd card ;-)

The S&Q tip is very nifty ! Thank you very much Nirv for giving that tip. If I understand correctly, the shutter speed should be twice teh framerate for this to work properly, right ?

Odd thing is happening with the FS7 though. Depending on the framerate, the hdmi output is either 1080p or 1080i(the latter does not play well with some of my monitor). But when using 4K@23.976, the hdmi output is not recognised by any of my monitor (UHD@23.976 is fine). Do you have the same problem ?

You have to ensure you have the same exposure in S&Q as you do in normal shooting I.e. Same frame rate and shutter speed.
