Let's talk glass: Lenses for the AF100!

Gotta say---> The last thing I want on this camera is a Sevo Zoom lens...

Never use the servo on the HVX's we own, and when we rent a RED or (not so much anymore) an Arri: you need the precise control of a Preston MicroForce, or just a hand on the barrel.

Just me - I'm kind of old school, learned film moving gear and sandbags apprenticing for a long time before I moved up. Now anyone with $800. and a video camera can be a 'Filmaker'.

G.

And the last thing I want, is to have to carry around a bunch of lenses and be
switching them all the time.....and I'm not especially stoked about shooting
video with SLR 'still' lenses. ....but that doesn't mean that I think they should
only make what I want......I think choice is good.

See, I WOULD like a 'video camera' with a 'video camera'
zoom lens with the shallow depth of field of the AF 100. And if they do make a
servo zoom lens, it shouldn't hurt those of you who don't want it, you just
don't buy it and stick with primes or SLR lenses or whatever glass you want,
I bet you can find a TON of lenses you DO like for this camera.
That's the beauty of an interchangable lens camcorder....it can be different
things to different people. That being said, I have no idea if anyone WILL actually
build a lens like that (although I would obviously like it). But if they do, I don't
see how it would affect those of you who don't want that type of lens,
they are selling this camera body only, just buy the lenses you want....and
don't buy the ones you don't.

By the way, I would never claim to be a filmmaker'. I am a 'video producer'. I do this
for money, NOT for art. I'd like to do my own films, but I have to pay the bills, and with
three kids under 6 I am pretty busy, so I just stick to projects that actually pay in cash,
not 'meals and credit'. So I probably have a totally different perspective on this than most
on this particular board, and my wants for a more 'video centric' lens are probably not in
big demand among most here, which is OK, one of these days there will be a video camera
made with a big chip, and a 'video' type lens, and I bet it won't be too far off in the future.

However just to prove I come in peace :-)
When I am actually paid in money, I will and do work on films.....heres one
of the ones I was a gaffer on:

I just wish someone would make a fast sub 11mm prime, and if so, under $1.5k. The fastest ultra-wide I could find was the Tokina 11mm-16mm. I do love the lens, but I'd like something faster, like 1.8 at least.

That's the problem with zooms, I've never seen any that are that fast.

Sub 11mm? Well, there's the Panasonic 8mm, but that's f/3.5; Olympus also makes an 8mm f/3.5. And there's the Lumix 14mm f/2.5, but that's not sub-11mm.

There's the Olympus 11-22, it's f/2.8 at 11mm.

There's also an Olympus 12-60, which isn't sub-11 but it's still pretty wide and f/2.8 at 12mm.

If you're willing to rent, you can get a 10mm Ultra Prime at f/1.9, or an 8mm Ultra Prime at f/2.8. While you're at it, there's the Master Prime 12mm, which is an amazing f/1.2 for a lens that wide.

What you want is possible, but there's the age-old adage of "good, fast, and cheap? Pick two." With lenses we should almost modify it to "wide, fast, and cheap? Pick two."

Haha, well I have 11mm F2.8 right now and am happy with it. Hopefully, we'll see some more lenses coming out that are fast and wide. I was hoping sigma would jump on that, but they are working on the tele end with their 85mmF1.4 which still isn't out yet!

I think Red makes some zoom lenses that are 2.9.......maybe not quite up to what
you want but getting closer. Course they cost more than the AF 100 camera does,
but if you want a fast zoom......

Hello Barry, do you know something about those briht zoom?
thanks

Mr.Kitao says :

" The next three lenses, the 25mm f/1.4 and the two bright zoom lenses will be both compact and high-quality lenses."

Aren't the DigiOptics Zooms both *T3's? Mind you I think the widest is 18-50.

*T3 would be f2.8 probably.

For those of you who plan on using the Tokina 11-16mm, I've been browsing for a good half hour now and haven't found the answer to if anyone's found a way to control the aperture manually if attached to a camera through an lens mount adapter (without an electronic connector)

Amen. I'm a DP, I have to give my clients what they want and an attitude of ohhhh I never zoom will not bring home the bacon.

I don't mind zooms, but the problem is none of them are really *that* fast. If I want super shallow DoF for certain scenes, I have to put on a fast prime. I'd *LOVE* to have a zoom lens with F1.4, but I don't see that happening (or at least not at the price point of all my primes combined in cost).

But, I do understand with the larger sensor, coming from zooms on other video cameras, *you* will specifically get more shallow DoF with a similarly rated zoom on the AF100 than what you've had available (unless you were using a 35mm adapter) :)

Nope, I don't know anything about what they're planning lens-wise. The 25mm f/1.4 is already listed on their website.

I don't know if this is one of them, but they list a lens on their site that's a 14-50 f/2.8-f/3.6, that's about twice as fast as the existing 14-140 over that same range, so that might be one of the new lenses.

Didn't say I wouldn't zoom, just I don't want (personally) a servo zoom... would never use it.

Don't get me wrong, I understand. I was just pointing out that it
wouldn't HURT you (or anyone else that doesn't want a servo zoom)
if someone made one.....I personally WOULD like a servo zoom and
would almost certainly NEVER use prime lenses but that doesn't mean
I wouldn't want good prime lenses to be available for the AF 100.

Sorry, I posted this on the "Combo" thread... it really belongs here....

What about using the lens from an HPX-300? (FUJINON TH17x5BRM for example)? I've been seeing them available separately and they would solve the problem of the servo control Zoom if the camera supports plugging it in (they are made for Panasonic control) as they have the zoom rocker as part of the lens. They are bayonet mount . The question is... how would it work with the larger sensor of the AF100? So, for an extra $2 - $3 K, you could have it all... right?

Quite possibly a silly question.

I'm looking at getting a set of Zeiss ZF lenses. I see they have two different 50mm lenses in the line.

Zeiss 50mm ZF Macro Planar T2 - $1,033.00

and

Zeiss 50mm Planar T1.4 - $725.00

Why is the slower one more expensive? Which one is "better"? Does the Macro Planar just allow me to focus closer?

Weird that Abelcine only sells one of the 50mm and Cinevate the other in their selection of lenses listed.

The difference is focus distance - The T2 focus is down to .24m and the T1.4 .45m.

There is also the exchange rate Cinevate is in Canada, Abel is south of the border.

Right, makes the Cinevate lenses cheaper for us in the US. So which one would you get for an all around workhorse 50mm?
