The RED 18-50mm zoom I used on my client's RED always looked and worked great.

Interesting. Those look almost exactly like the old RED zooms...

On their forum, RED said they have nothing to do with these...so I wonder what the deal is there.
The deal seams to be that they are heaps cheaper at B&H.
Maybe they come from the same manufacturer that make the Red lenses, just at different times or shifts from the same production line.
Really? I've never had the opportunity to use a set myself, but I have heard really good things about them (cost aside), even from rather independent specialists and technicians...
Edit: The DigiOptical zooms are rehoused Sigma lenses. Presumably these. They are supposed to be "decent optically" but rather poor mechanically (go figure).

The reason its so much cheaper is because the 18-50 was disconitnued by RED some months ago. It's been replaced by the 17-50mm Pro zoom, which I hear is better optically and mechanically. RED themselves were selling the 18-50 at a steep discount for a while. Now I don't think you can buy one at the red store.
The people who make the old 18-50mm may be leveraging their assembly line to sell off some of their lenses now that they don't have an exclusivity agreement in place with RED. Or it may be just surplus from the same manufacturer.
An easy mod is to make a collar with a stick on for the zoom barrel. I'm surprised this isn't being sold by one of the companies making follow focus and lens gears.
Red zooms are (me thinks) converted Sigma lenses.
Duclos convert the 12-24mm nikon zoom to cine specs:

but I am not sure if their cine lenses have a changed focus mechanism for a long throw.
Duclos is the bomb. They will convert just about any still lense for cine use for approximately
$250.00!

Lol, so it's not just me then. I actually tried a loop, with a number of antennas coming off the lens barrel and it worked pretty well. Looks ridiculous though :cheesy:I keep a few of these around.
I think that their $250 conversion does only a 80mm front ring, aperture deckling and a focus gear. A good cine style lens should also have a smooth focus mechanism with a long throw.
Your math is correct, but missing a crucial piece -- while the Four Thirds standard is a 17.3mm wide sensor, the AF100 doesn't use that. It uses an <oversized> sensor, which is about 19mm wide. Hence the smaller crop factor.Where does 1.18x come from?
If Canon APS-C is 1.6x full frame and u43 is 2.0x, isnt 2.0/1.6 = 1.25?

Certainly. Although I prefer to say that the Full Frame has a "Cinema Crop Factor" of 0.62...Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation. Then shouldn't we say that the Full Frame crop factor is 1.89x instead of 2x?
36/19 = 1.89
