Let's talk glass: Lenses for the AF100!

Yep.

It's coming.

Sweet funky monkey... if there comes an adapter that would allow me to use the Nikon AFS lenses I have already (14-24/2.8 AFS, 24-70/2.8 AFS, 105mm f/2.8 AFS VR, and 70-200/2.8 AFS VR) with AUTOFOCUS on the AF100, I'd be in heaven!

I've officially started saving for the AF100. Put away my first $1000 towards it on Friday :2vrolijk_08:

Waiting for Scarlet and for this camera to appear made me go and purchase a respectable colection of Canon glass.I really hope we get info on this 4/3 to EOS mount ASAP. This is the KEY factor for me to immediately jump to trusty panny on the 100 vs holding for Canon's answer. If this adapter makes my Canon glass fully functional on the 100, then its a done deal. No more down sides- excluding the internal codec, but, what the heck, hdmi or hd sdi capture, here we go.

Well, while we're all salivating about the news of the AF100 prototype, I'm curious... what are some lenses that you guys will be using on your AF100? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Certainly, the 14-140 is a nice all-purpose run 'n' gun lens, but with a big, juicy µ4/3 sensor and the ability to adapt virtually any SLR lens to this camera (primes, fast zooms, macro lenses, etc), the 14-140 is going to be in my bag for emergencies only, I think.

My shop does a lot of work with lens adapters already, so we have a bunch of Zeiss primes that are going to feel the love. Also, as a photographer by hobby, I personally have a number of Nikon "F" mount lenses (from my D700) and µ4/3 lenses (from my GF1) that I'm itching to use for video on this new rig!

Some lenses that I'm VERY excited to potentially use on an AF100:
-Samyang 8mm f/3.5 fisheye ($300 well spent!)
-Panasonic Lumix 7-14mm f/4 (This one's going to be straight up badass for a lot of ultra-wide-angle situations!)
-Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7
-Sigma 24mm f/1.8 (Nikon F mount)
-Zeiss 28mm f/2 ZF (Nikon F mount)
-Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZF (Nikon F mount)
-Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AFD
-Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 ZF (Nikon F mount)
-Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 ZF (Nikon F mount)
-Nikon 105mm f/1.8 AIS
-Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AIS
-Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AFS G VR Micro (aperture controllable via a cheap chinese made Nikon-µ4/3 adapter!)
-Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AFD
-Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AFS G VR1 (aperture controllable via a cheap chinese made Nikon-µ4/3 adapter!)
-Tamron 300mm f/2.8 (Nikon F Mount)

Think of all of the money you're not spending on a Letus35 Extreme or SGpro + Blade and rails... and think how much more light you're going to be sucking in with fast primes and fast zooms!

What is your lens kit going to look like? What are some fun lenses that'll open new doors for your video/film work on this rig? (e.g. super telephotos, circular fisheyes, and tilt shift primes, anyone?)

This Contax Zeiss set with a Cameraquest adaptor.
And i will buy the AF100 with the new Panasonic 7-14mm.

I suppose the folks who make the adapters are scrambling, but can't really move 'till the actual final final camera is released... do you know if the techs are coordinating?
Actually, there's nothing holding them back. The lens mount and controls are identical to the GH1, which has been out for over a year. It's already a finalized specification.

From the activity on this forum... it begs the question... Don't you sleep? But seriously, I think I speak for others here that your time and effort is much appreciated.
Thanks! Sleeping happens at odd hours, but remember Amsterdam is about 8 hours ahead so while it may look like I was posting at incredibly odd hours, sometimes they were reasonable hours for Amsterdam. Of course, sometimes it was 3:00 a.m. Amsterdam time, too. :) So no, it's fair to say that this week I didn't sleep more than maybe five hours a day.

Book your ticket. it's my understanding that what you're asking for, will happen.

This may have been answered before, but just in case...

Anyone know if regular Canon EOS lenses will be usable with the AF100? And if so, would they be manual control only, or would autofocus work? And what about aperture control?

If a mechanical adapter is used, then you won't have access to the lens's autofocus or ability to change the iris. There are mechanical adapters that have a knob that lets you adjust iris.

I have discussed with a certain company the prospect of making an electronic adapter which would allow access to all of the EOS lens's automatic functions, and they said that they are already working on it. So -- I fully expect there to be a fully-electronic adapter on the market, probably before the AF100 is released.

Plus you could always keep an EOS SLR (wouldn't even have to be digital) around to do aperture adjustments for the lenses.

If that adaptor does come out I may have to pick one up for my GH1, not because I have or want to have any EF glass, but because I shoot with and have tons of friends that have an investment in the system and it would be awesome to be able to share lenses.

How about, ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Seriously though, I have a collection of vintage manual Nikon lenses I am dying to try on the AF-100, and will continue to pick up vintage glass for it. I am also very interested in the Panasonic 7-14 and 14-140. I think those two will be very useful.

(sorry, I don't know how to place a quote in the nice little box)

Your quote begs the question... If the mount and controls are identical to the GH1, why hasn't there been an adapter for vintage Nikon glass developed yet?
Perhaps since the AF100 won't be shipping with a lens, it automatically brings a sense of urgency and excitement to the lens issue...
Just for grins, do you know if it will deliver digital hi res stills? (like the Scarlet)
The big difference in waiting for the AF100 is that one can have a reasonable expectation that it will, in fact, be out roughly when they say it will. Personally I'm almost ready to plunk down for a pre-order....
All the Best

Good question -- I don't know the answer.

At ~2k, but not at 3k like the Scarlet. AF100 will be able to capture a 1920x1080 single frame.

It's my understanding that the 50/0.95 Noktor is a rebranded/remounted ultra fast CCTV/security camera lens... but I've heard that it does well. I'll let others be early adopters though... They didn't exist before this particular lens was announced last April.

I'd just stick with CV M-mount and the newer M43 mounts if I had a 4/3 system. I like speed, metal bodied MF lenses and pretty much Zeiss quality at a slightly cheaper price. Zeiss ZM and ZF are quite pricey and also bigger than those little CV's. Too bad I am unable to afford one of those AF100's...i'll just stick with my 5D2 and humongo lenses :)
