Let the Right One In

I watched this last night. AMAZING film. Beautifully shot and paced. Just enough violence and gore to keep boredom from setting in. One of the best I have seen this year. If you haven't seen it, make sure you do.

HOLLY F'N SHIZEN HOUZEN!

What an incredibly moving movie.

Yeah... I know it's a vampire flick but it is one of the best flicks I have ever seen.

Bar none.

Excellent casting, cinematography, story line, .... etc etc etc!

Very impressed!

spoilers...

I thought this movie was amazing. Here's the thing with the whole castration. Yes, that's how it is in the novel, but since the novelist was also the screenwriter, and he left that information as well as a lot of other key information out, I think the idea is that you're supposed to interpret it how you want to interpret it. Is she a boy? Or is she a girl? That's up to you. In addition to the castration stuff, in the novel the man who takes care of her is supposed to be a pedophile who kills and feeds her in order to get the benefits of being with a 12 year old child. Which is interesting. But that's never brought up in the movie. The more logical conclusion is that she met him when he too was a 12 year old, and while he grew old, she did not, and (as someone earlier mentioned), we have to wonder if she will now do the same to Oskar. Is her relationship with Oskar real? Or is she/he doing this only to gain another provider.

I wish I'd never heard anything about the novel because the way I originally interpreted it was that she was a girl, he was a boy, they were both extremely lonely, they found each other and fell in love. Even though I now have all this other stuff messing with my head, that's still how I choose to interpret it.

c.g._eads, your interpretation is spot on for what most people see during their first viewing, myself included.

SPOILERS

I believe it was the director's choice to leave a lot more for the viewers to interpret. Not to mention, the subject matter in the novel might have been blown out of proportion by the media or whomever and that part of the story would have totally been ruined. There is a North American remake planned which is supposed to stay more faithful to the novel. If they do, I am sure people will make a big stink about it. For some reason, I can't see it happening. Kind of like a faithful Oldboy adaptation.

There are enough clues in the movie to hint at what was not shown from the novel. Eli's protector only goes after young male boys to feed her with. Yet we know she can easily feed on anyone. The castration shot is fast, but it is definitely there. Their is also the dialogue exchange between Oskar and Eli where she replies something like "would you still like me if I wasn't a girl". Also, the subplot about his father hints at it. The use of voice over for Eli, which I found apparent during the original viewing. Well, I was also thinking that maybe she just had a really low/deep voice.

They are making an american version! (yuck) I read an interview with the dircetor on ifilm and he said they are making it and he hopes the director knows what he or she is doing.

This is film is not only one of the best horror films I've ever seen, it's really a great film, regardless of the genre. It's such a beautifully-crafted film with wonder, sincere and tender performances from the child actors. And the cinematography is stunning.

Thought I could give you some recap of the swedish commentary track that isnt available in the US.

(Director and Writer/Author)

***********Spoiler warning*******************

Hakan is "The Mr Bean of serial killers"

The "famous" shoot of Eli was a doll.

They had read alot on internet forums and
* Oscars dad is not gay
* Its not a vampire in the locker room, its one of the bullies.

The writer forgot in the book that Eli must be invited in to the hospital, so he thought in retrospect that she didnt need invitation in public places. They did however add an invitation in the movie in post. And the one that invites her is Lindqvist himself. But he did say that the same thing happens in the movie when Eli didnt need an invitation in the swimminghall.

Alfredson play that angry neighbour that screams to them to be quiet.

The english audience laugh when they saw the sign on the Bathhouse spelled BAD. (Bad = Bath in swedish)

They though Eli was nasty when she used her innocense to get a victim.

They director asked the writer if Eli was in the cab at the end, and the writer replys: of course why shouldnt she be in the cab. Dir: Well maybe its just Oscar that believes she is in the cab.

Eli tries to be human, by using much more clothes during the movie.

Avoid cats in a movie, they bring more problems then they solve.

Its one of those films that you watch and then think that nothing else added or changed could have made it better, amazing film, great directing along with a well adapted screenplay.

The book and the film are best left apart. Having seen the film first, I absolutly loved it, favorite film of the year. Then I read the book, which filled in many details, (that i'd rather not have known) but still a good read. This is one of those rare instances where I feel the film is better then the book.

It's funny in retrospect, after reading the book, the movie suddenly became much more complicated then it had felt the first time I watched it. I'm happy the screenwriter (who is also the author) decided to leave a lot of the facts out of the characters back-stories. And if you have the option to read the book first, don't. Just watch the movie, with subtitles, not the dubbed version, and let it haunt you.

***SPOILERS***

The Morse Code taps on the box in the last scene spell , KISS KISS.

This movie was weird from the start with the whole androgynous, cross dressing adolescent vampire, bit what the f**k was that s**t they just showed when oskar looked in on eli changing? What the **** man, the writer of this must be a weird pedophile or something

Again I say, what the ****ing **** man

No offense to anyone BTW, I liked the sound, the grading and the cinematography, but the story is just too freaking weird imo

That's because when the vampire child says "I am not a girl" she is also referring to the fact tha she was born a boy and castrated before she became a vampire. Like an earlier poster already said. There are a lot of things in this movie . It goes deep, the androgyny of both the characters was very deliberate in the casting.

Just so you guys know where my reaction is coming from, I think this is the first horror/weirdest film I have ever seen. I never watch horror movies, not because they scare me (they really don't have any effect on me), its just they don't interest me in any way

I might watch it again today, I liked the cinematography a lot and the color grade, its just the story. I went in expecting it to be kinda weird/creepy based on what I was told but I didn't expect to see what a castrated 12year old would look like :/
