I'm looking to discover information about HD cameras that have been forgotten and/or underused/underdiscussed, cameras no longer considered in-vogue by the modern digital filmmaker who abandons old systems as soon as new-tech comes along; cameras that, perhaps, were once unattainable financially, and have now become affordable on the used camera market; or cameras that, though new, have been eclipsed by the HDSLR and RED hype.
For instance: Early, no longer in production (used) HDCAM video cameras; new HD cameras like the Ikonoskop A-cam dII and the Drama (often talked about here are dvxuser, but unknown to many); broadcast, security solutions rarely, if ever, used for non-industrial/broadcast applications (Ikegami cameras); and/or foreign/bootleg models (asian HD).
The only criterion is reasonable affordability (note: I definitely want to include used models). The Drama is pushing the limits of affordability at at projected price of 10,000 euros (13,000 USD). We'll cap it there, more or less. For instance, there are used Sony HDW-700A cameras (one of -- if not the -- first legitimate, portable, usable HD cameras) currently available for purchase on eBay starting at $6,500, Buy It Now.
I'm looking for such cameras as those used to shoot feature films many consider masterpieces (Cache [Sony HDW-750], ivans xtc, All About Lily Chou-Chou [Sony HDW-900]) -- and have, undeniably, a unique, 'high-definition digital video' aesthetic. An aesthetic that has been disingenuously tossed aside in favor of film mimicry. For those filmmakers interested in digital video for its own aesthetic possibilities, these older cameras -- and the new, underdog trailblazers that are as yet untried, their possibilities unknown to us -- are invaluable, and I'd like to begin to compile some information about them.
I'll start a list, and I'd love some help adding to it:
