Lenses wider than 24mm on 5D Mark II and super zooms

Hey guys, what super-wide options are there on a full frame sensor? Anything equivilent to the 10-20mm on a 1.6x crop EFS mount? (10mm = 16mm full frame equiv.)

Or beyond 24mm do you have to choose a fisheye?

Are the super wides giving full frame coverage also super expensive?

I am also looking at a wide-super-zoom lens for versitility and convinience while travelling light. Any options similar to the usual 18-200mm bunch of EFS lenses?

I know there are the 24-105 lenses but I'm looking to go longer than 105mm while keeping the wide angle at 24 or 28. Am I asking too much?

i posted some video a few days ago shoot with the 17-35mm (the newest version is the 16-35mm mkII, probably one of Canon's most popular lenses)

Well you're all ready stuck with an expensive camera, so yeah the super-wides are going to be super expensive when compared with EF-S lenses. The unfortunate part of owning a FF camera like the 5D Mark II is that it is incompatible with the sometimes cheaper EF-S lenses.

As far as a super wide and long telephoto lens in the same package, Canon does not make such a thing. Not sure about Tokina, Sigma, Nikon, or Zeiss. The closest thing would be the EF 28-200mm, or EF 28-300mm, but you lose the super wide. That being said, those two lenses offer quite a bit of focal range which would serve most purposes, other than ultra-wide of course. You do realize that with that kind of range comes an expensive price tag of over $2000 per lens.

The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L would be my recommendation for wide angle zoom, plus speed, or the EF 17-40mm f/4L which is a little cheaper, but slower. Other than that, you would have to check other manufacturers, or go with one of the two telephoto zooms I mentioned above.

Having saidi all that, I don't think you would want one lens that's super wide and really long anyway, because based on current optical limitations in the manufacturing process, there would be some compromises on one end or the other. That, or the lens would be massive and not easy to handle.

Ended up with a Sigma 17-35mm F2.8 EX HSM for £160. Do you think this is a good choice? It's not got the most accurate AF I've ever seen though! Had to set the AF micro-adjustment in the 5D's menus to +20 (maximum on the scale!!) Do I have a faulty lens?

The is a Tamron 24-200mm EF lens for full frame, that is only £125 but image quality reviews I've seen thus far have been very mixed. Is this a bargain for it's range, or best avoided? Anyone have personal experience of the lenses?

I continue to trawl Google for info...

Actually there are a lot of great lenses in the 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24mm range that will work on a full frame camera like the 5D. The upside is that many of these lenses have good image quality at f/2.8. With crop cameras you have fewer choices and most of them tend to be slower than f/2.8. You can also use Tilt/Shift lenses in the 17 & 24 range with the 5D.

The Sigma 12-24mm is (As far as I know) the widest zoom lens in an EF mount. It's fantastic if you use it right.

>It's fantastic if you use it right.

It is slow but for some applications this maybe ok.

Wider than 24mm........

Wider than 24mm........

I am more of a still photographer then video, but I do have the 5D MkII, I have both the Canon and Nikon system. It seems that the Nikon wide angles are sharper then the Canon, I used a adapter on the Nikon lenses for my Canon. If you want a very sharp lenses the Nikon 17-35 mm zoom is a very good one to get, it is also cheaper then the Canon 16-35mm. I also used the 14mm Nikon lens, which has been around and also cheap and sharper, compare to the Canon. Some say the 14mm MkII is sharp but I already have the Nikon 14mm. But after 35mm both Canon and Nikon are equals.

Just to be devils advocate....

2600$ for a FF extremely sensitive 1080P camera is NOT expensive.... ;)
