Lens?

I’ve been using a HPX170 for years for corporate work and have been happy with results.

Recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of using my Nikon D750 for video work.

I was interested in knowing what lens you would use for interviews or shooting b-roll.

I currently own a 50mm lens.

I guess I was looking for a “go to” lens that fit most situations. I know that this is a broad subject. Maybe a 24-70mm?

Yeah, the 24-70mm is the full-frame 'go-to' zoom for close proximity filming.

The 70-200mm is usually the next one on the list (for most people considering zooms) for the additional 'sniping' of b-roll from far away.

Another versatile option would be a Nikon 24-120mm f/4 or Sigma 24-105mm f/4 (I haven't had a chance to use one myself).

I almost always use a prime for interviews on my D7000, usually a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D or Hasselblad 80mm f/2.8 CF.

The 24mm f/2.8D is a great broll lens, as long as you can zoom with your feet, but you might want a 35mm since you're on full frame.

I have a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 for stills, as it's short focus throw makes it difficult to use for video.

If I could ask a dumb question.

What is the difference in using a 35mm lens as opposed to using a prime lens?

A prime lens has a fixed focal length, i.e. it doesn't zoom, and they're sharper than zoom lenses (typically). I don't think that nikons makes any full frame zooms faster than f/2.8 (might be a physics limitation), but their prime lenses start at f/1.4 (except for the 1978 50mm f/1.2).

A zoom lens would be more versatile, but they're also generally more expensive. What's your budget?

I guess these are the 'normal set ups'

Slow and considered filming..
20 50 80 135 primes (and longer /more 24 35 300, macro etc)

Corporate with a little time but not far to walk..
24-70 50 70-200 (2.8)

Event with less time and further to walk
24-105 50 70-200 (4)

non stop reality/live to air..
S35 camera and CN 17-120* or buy a camcorder

You will see that as one progresses down this sequence compromises come in terms of Tstop cost mass and FOV.

*That is S35 - no equivilent in Fullframe.
