Lens protection while hanging out a window

I have to take some shots at full highway speed hanging out the window... actually I'm going to be spending the better part of the day doing this. What the heck do I use to protect my lens? I was thinking about getting a piece of plexiglass from homedepot and cutting it and taping it over my lens hood... are there any other options?

With my H+S hat on - actually you don't - it's a danger to you and other road users and if you're seen by the Police expect to get pulled over and your insurance to perform these "stunts" checked.

If you need those shots you should have an appropriate camera mounted on a professional rig on the car.

Sorry if that all sounds a bit boring but thought it worth mentioning...

Good luck with it anyway - whatever you choose to do.

It's not really that bad, I bought a Digital Juice Lowrider to mount the camera on the window, but i'm not doing any stunts or actually having my body hung out the window just the lens of the camera. I have a UV filter but I'm still worried about rocks and other things hitting my lens and doing damage to it. I'm doing board runs for an advertising company so their clients don't have to drive by the billboards to see how visible/where they're located and traffic volume. Almost like a virtual house tour for home sales... this is just billboards. The camera will be hanging out the window on a mount with me inside the car, I'm just looking for lense protection... I guess i made it sound a little more intense than it actually was haha

If you go with a shield, the Acrylite brand offers acrylic materials with much lower optical distortion than typical plexy from the hardware store.
My buddy who works at Kerner Optical tells me they use it for the lens windows on their crash boxes.

Be careful. Use safety straps with any car rig!
