lens on camera - what others do or don't do

I was wondering what others do or don't do;

On my Rebel Xti I keep the lens on it at all times - lens size Canon 18-55mm (kit lens)
On my t3i I kept (sold the camera) the lens on it at all times - lens size Tamron 17-50mm

Now I have the 5d and I at the moment have the Sigma 50mm (heavy lens) on it. I was wonder it that is good or is it better to keep removing the lens and putting the cover back on the camera. I was thinking by doing this you have a better chance of dirt getting into your camera? Also maybe the weight of the lens could slowly damage the camera?

I asked the same question a month ago (with the same concerns you had - weight, dust, etc.), but most people seemed to keep a lens on because of the dust issue and the convenience. For a while, I continued to break everything down at the end of the day, but I recently been using the Canon 70-200mm (2.8) lens more than anything else and I have been keeping everything in one of these:

I'm thinking it's more of personal preference than anything else..

Hey NorBro - Thanks for the info. I like that setup. I think it would fit into my camera bag that carries the HVX200 and knowing that the 5d and lens is safe in its own case within another case. The price doesn't look that bad either. How do you like your lens? Is it the ii? I just received mine a few days ago. Takes great photos but still trying to get the camera part figured out for video.

Yea, it's II...it's perfect for me and the only lens I will probably ever buy at that price..I've been renting a lot but wanted to get a perfect zoom that covers a useful (the most useful IMO) focal range..

I have never even considered taking the lens off & putting a body cap on if for no other reason than that the camera is always ready for action (I take plenty of stills as well as video).

I usually leave one body permanantly attached to my 70-200, and the other body gets stripped of the lens and given a body cap, for no other reason than convenient packing and fitting in my backpack. I'm about to invest in a few more lenses, so at that point a new bag will be on the way - and one of the criteria will be the ability to hold 2-3 bodies with lenses attached.
