Lens hood for wide angle accessory lens

Hello Listers,

The attached photos show a soft lens hood that is workable for the Panny WA lens for the HMC40.

I got this soft Cinetactics DV lens hood as a gimme on a cam deal. When I got it and I didn't think I'd ever use it, but when I bought a wide angle for the HMC, it seemed workable. You don't use their thread adapter, you just choke the mounting strap at the base around the small part of the accessory lens. I don't know if they have any mounting adapters that would make this work better. It isn't perfect, and tends to flop about a little more than you would like and might take the focus ring with it if it moves. I think it could be improved a little with some sort of extra stabilization. In any event, it provides a not too expensive alternative to the OEM lens hood.

If you are on stix and not moving much, it works fine with no vignette on the .7 adapter. If you were on the hoof, don't bother.

Update to the port above:

I spoke with Greg the designer for Cinetactics and he suggested putting it on the big end of the lens. I had tried that before and thought it too tight like I might break something. But when I slid it up from the small end up taper, badabing, it gripped perfectly on the knurled end of the lens which is a little like the adapters they make. Should of tried that before, dah. No wobble, fits perfect, problem solved! Looks pretty cool too.

See updated photos. Note the wing - french flag is tacked on with velcro and is adjustable.

Grant,

I have exactly the same "matte box" and it works great. It's a bit floppy as you say, but for me it has the advantage of being very portable - folded up, it will slide into my backpack easily. Not at all bad for the cash. It slips nicely onto my Century 0.66x WA, and with the adapter ring directly onto the camera's stock lens.

I've got the filter mounts for it too, and the extra large french flag; it saved my life during some midwinter shooting when the sun was really, really low and there was a lot of lens flare.

I'm still considering a "proper" mattebox for some occasions, but this is a great little piece of kit.

Bob,

Yes that is the correct page. In my case, it is just the plain MatteBlox DV which is a hundred bucks. I got mine as a throw-in with my HPX and didn't think I'd ever use it on that cam.

The great thing about using this with the Panny .7 WA is that the knurls in the lens are quite large and really grip the matte-box, no adapter needed and the mount is pretty solid. I had been trying to use it on the barrel of the lens which was pretty marginal. Note that with the filter holders you could add the needed ND filters when outdoors. Thus far, no vignetting. I am tempted to try the oversize flag.

GearDear = Traditional metal and or plastic system which should be used with a rail mount.

MatteBlox = Cordura fabric strapon, quick to mount, folds flat, gives you a quick easy option when using a WA attachment since the stock hood isn't useable.

Both have there place.

What LCD hoodie is that you are using??

Cinetactics.

And, after I realized that you could mount this on the big end of the Panny lens, it works great, no wobble or warble at all. The Panny lens has some heavy knurls on the big end that grip the Cinetactics mount.
