Lens flare on Tokina 28-70?

So I just received a Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 two days ago (which I assume is the Angenioux version, though it never said so in the Ebay auction). Took it on a shoot yesterday, mostly talking heads against a black background and for that it was fine. But I had to shoot about an hour's worth of b-roll of a presentation in a ballroom type setting. There were room lights on the wall that I couldn't avoid getting in the shot, nothing super bright and they were in fixtures, but they were causing some bad lens flares. Fortunately, I brought the lens it was supposed to replace... a Nikon 24-85 f/2.8-4... and it was just fine with no flares and used it for the b-roll instead. I've actually never gotten any lens flare with the Nikon.

After playing around with it, any direct light whatsoever is causing lens flare (some 20w lights in my kitchen look like the Photoshop plugin). Since I know several folks here have various versions of this lens... is this normal? Because if it is, that's going to cause some problems for me down the road with some other projects (I've been shooting a lot of medical stuff, so light sources in the shot is going to be unavoidable).

I have the same lens. I have had flairs before, but try a matte box or at least a lens hood. Remember, if a light is pointing right down the barrel of any lens, your going to get flairs.

But, like a commenter above, flairs add character! A lot of clients like the look.

Except mine don't... lens flares from a doctor's exam tools or in an operating room isn't the character they're looking for :( . Some of the stuff I had shot on my HMC150 before I got the AF100 would have looked like a fireworks show with this lens. (though I agree, some of the lens flares looked quite cool).

I did put a lens hood on it before I used it, so any off-axis light source was a non-issue. The not particularly bright wall lights (100w?) in covered fixtures that I couldn't avoid being in the shot were, but weren't on my Nikon 24-85mm. Sucks, because I really like this lens a lot, but the only huge advantage over the Nikon is a constant f/2.8 as opposed to f/2.8-4, which I can work around (hugely shallow DoF isn't that big a deal).

It will be on Ebay late tonight if anyone's interested :)
