GH5 lens choice -coming from canon.

For a more real-world test (based on shooting photos with this lens) you can look at Steve Huff's review of this lens, where he concludes...

"Great sharpness, contrast and color. Truly pro quality and great on the OM-D E-M5."

"Panasonic has another winner on their hands, though a pricey one and this lens can stand toe to toe with the Nikon and Canon 24-70 equivalents while being MUCH smaller."

Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 Zoom Lens Review for Micro 4/3

Plenty of reports claiming it's not so impressive and not as good as the Zuiko 12-40 at the corners and edges. I'm not buying a 3rd copy......

I also really like the Olympus Pro lenses but many don't have optical IS and DUAL IS is not possible with Olympus lenses and Panasonic bodies.

I also worked with Canon cameras and lenses for a long time. Then I had a 7d Mk2 and a GH4 for a few years. Also several Canon lenses. A few months back I sold the 7d and bought a few native Panasonic lenses together with the GH5:

15mm 1.7, 42.5 1.7, 12-35 2.8v1 and 7-14 f4.

I have the Metabones Xl and I use it with rented cinema EF glass for higher value productions and also with my Canon 50mm 1.4 and 14-40 f4.

Pros of Canon Glass + MBSB
- You can rent high quality cinema Glass
- It looks way more "pro" when your little GH5 is fitted with a massive lens, like let's say the Canon 80mm 1.2 or a Zeiss CP2 (For some clients it's important)
- You can use your current Canon glass
- You get closer to the Super 35mm look in regards to depth of field and field of view
- It's great if you have to share with EF systems or if you are looking to buy an EF mount camera in the future (like the EVA1).

Pros of native glass

- Way smaller and much friendlier for travel or run and gun
- You will use some of the great features of the GH5 like Dual IS, so it's great for HH work
- WAY better for stills, the autofocus works perfectly in stills mode.
- Somewhat cheaper optics and great quality and sharpness

So in the end I believe the flexibility of the M43 means that you will end up having and using EF+MBSB and native, like I did.

Cheers!

I like the Olympus Pro lenses for my GH5 and have the 7-14mm, the 12-40mm and the 40-150mm they’re f2.8 throughout their zoom range and have hard stops for focus pulls.

My favorite the 12-40mm, it all I need for most jobs.

If you love the Sigma, and I bet you do, then SpeedBooster is an obvious choice. But before you buy even that, why not rent one and a good native lens, and see for yourself? The size and responsiveness of good native glass is remarkable, and depending on your shooting style, may be meaningful. Every time I work with my cine glass, I wish it was as easy and light as the native lenses I use for photography. :-)
