Lens Basics - Okay, just after the basics.

So, I've mostly been dealing with single lens cameras (DVX, HVX, PMW-EX1) and have just gotten my hands on a 5D Mark II for a couple days. I know the basics about lenses (Macro for really close shots, telephoto for distance, zoom lenses can zoom and primes are fixed). I even understand that f/1.8 has to do with the speed of the lens, and primes are better for low light situations generally (closer to 1.2 you get the better?). Correct any of this if it's not accurate. :D

What I don't understand are the millimeters. In what cases should I use a 50mm lens, then switch to a 24mm? Is it just preference? What purpose does it suit? I'm talking strictly millimeters, I (think at least) understand changing to a different lens with a different f stop. Or then go from a 24mm to a 105mm. What changes in the image? Is it just how wide the shot is?

Anyways, I'd like to know so that I can make the best use out of my 5D tests, particularly since I'd like to shoot a short on it.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:

How come my post isn't showing up in the forum...?
