lens aperture control vs. camera aperture....questions

Okay, I just placed my order for a RR M2e and the whole kit. Been reading alot and doing my homework. (HVX200)

One thing I'm not too clear about is the appropriate use of the lens aperture.

In a optimal lighting situation and for sharpest results I understand lens and camera body should be at f5.6 w/ a shutter angle of 180d.

Now when I got to make adjustments to alter that I always adjust the lens first right? leaving the camera body at 5.6?

When do you adjust the lens vs the camera body?

tell me if my thinking is correct please,

My understanding is to use the lens to select my depth of field and then to use my camera body aperture to help get the correct exposure for that scene. If I have lights then I can use lighting to achieve my exposure at the selected DOF.

I shoot alot with my Nikon D200 and am very familiar to my lenses and the use of DOF etc..... it's just adding the second aperture control on teh camera body that is throwing me off.

thank you,

just trying to clear this up!

Depending on what lens you are using, it my not be true that its sharpest point is going to be f5.6. Example, a few reviews I have read of the nikon f1.2 say that F2-F4 is the sharpest part of the lens. When I had my DIY dop adapter, I would do what you mentioned above. Use the 35mm lens to control depth of field and to some degree exposure and the cameras lens for fine tuning.

I am sure someone else can provide some more insight. Just thought id share my methods.

There are no rules. You obviously understand DOF so just apply what you know to the individual situation. How sharp the camera is on the adapter at what f stop depends on your particular equipment. Ditto for your 35mm lens. Usually you are compromising something.

thanks for your input, sounds like I'm on the right track then.

and yes I do understand that every lens is different and has a different sweet spot.

I work in 3D (my day job) and am very familiar with trying to "match" lenses. It startling that even really expensive lenses we have tested have been very different from each other in many ways. We have gone thru as many as 8 lenses to find 2 that were in each others neighborhood.

I guess what I'm getting at now is what has a bigger effect on edge to edge sharpness? the lens or the aperture control on the camera body? This might affect my choices of which to adjust first.

Now that I think of it, I guess I just answer all my own questions when I get my rig running and run some tests on some charts with my lenses/camera..... I guess I was curious what knowledge is already out there about this....save me some time perhaps.
