Lenovo laptops

Hey guys, thanks for starting this thread. I had never looked into Lenovo before, and I have been thinking about getting a Laptop for some time. Now I know which one I want! They make excellent products for the price.

Our company uses Dells, but just in the last year. Before that we used Lenovo thinkpads (R series.) As a technician who deals with these things in mass numbers and daily my assessment is that the older thinkpads are far sturdier for field use than the Dells. The Dells are core 2 duo and much faster but that's completely apples and oranges as I 'm talking purely about build quality (and the Lenovo's are just older, can't blame them for less processor). The Lenovo's have FW and express slots as well, unlike the newer Dells. Customer/warranty service is good on both with 24 hour turnaround on shipping you a box to send it in for repair in the case of a serious issue. Average up time between the two brands favors the Lenovo's. Neither will survive a drop nor dumping a coke or coffee on it- but for the money I'd go with a Lenovo without hesitation. Yes they do suck the juice and have less battery time, and yes they are heavier. I don't mind heavy myself, at least not for a AV field work. For desk jockies going between meetings, go with light, but for hooking up camera's and drives etc, who cares and the sturdier the better.

Just thought I would come on here to mention that there is a really good deal going on these....I just ordered an R-series with an advertised savings on the Lenovo site PLUS a 15% off e-coupon. I saved a whole bunch.

Here is why Lenovo may be having a sale on laptops. They are expected to release a Mac Air type laptop. It appears to be a 13.3", DVD, 3 USB, 80-200 gig HD, WiFi, 3.5 lb laptop. Expected to be released mid March, if not sooner. Won't be cheap.

Not quite a development platform like the R or T series laptops, but should be cool for traveling.

You know, since Expresscard 32/54 are electrically just PCEe-1X, I should be able to whip up an adapter to plug in your card straight into the laptop.

It'd be the same concept as those adapters everyone uses with their Macbook pros and other lappies that don't have PCMCIA/PC Card/P2 connectivity, excetp you'd get a little docking station with a small backplane for a PCI-e card.

You could then use a Blackmagic card or any other card without a full docking station.

Oh, and Barry: you can get SD cards with USB terminals. You just pull them out of the HXV, snap them in half, then plug the other end into a USB port on your PC.

i thought you were a mac kinda guy? or any kinda guy!!
good to know im ok with my pc stuff still.

oh i have a user film in the userfilm section of dvx100 !! link to forum post here

Okay, I'm heading out into the field next week on a reasonably big job, and I need some storage space. But I don't want to haul a bunch of drives around and whatnot. Traveling to the other side of the country, don't want to carry a bunch of gear, so...

I got an Ultrabay drive adapter and put in one of these... and now my laptop has 500GB (half a terabyte!) of internal storage. And the Ultrabay is hot-swappable: I could pluck it out and swap the drive out in about five seconds and have another 320GB ready to go. And, get this: because I have both a PCMCIA slot and an ExpressCard slot, I could use one of these and actually offload two P2 cards simultaneously to two separate drives. Two 32GB cards (64GB total) could offload in 16 minutes of computer time... heh. This Lenovo rocks.

But they have just updated to XP sp3. They should forget vista and make a good working 64 version of the xp.
And I don't know who said me or where i read it but I heard that windows is doubting about keep on going with vista....you know, rumors.....

Alienware, frankly when it comes to hardware, they are better then the MAC. But the main reason I want to go to mac, THE OS. I can't do windows anymore. I also want to try my hand at Final Cut.

Keeps getting crazier, now for $999 you get:
2.4 ghz dual core CPU
Dedicated nvidia graphics
wifi ready
BLU RAY recordable drive
XP Pro (rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated)

Hey Brian,

What Laptop are you looking at? I'm putting together a sheet and that sounds like a really great deal. What's the Screen size and max resolution?

I believe it was the 14". My last laptop had the screen with all the fixins and it looked like any other washed out lcd and anyway I always use an external monitor anyhow, so that's one area I cut corners. I also use external hard drives so I set it up with just t he 80 gig.

Still, consider what you get at 1K. You've effectively gotten a desktop replacement based on computing specs alone if you use externals. So it's still a viable option.

Can you point me to the link so that I can include it? Regardless of screen size. I can't seem to find it on the Lenovo site, or at least one that features a 2.4Ghz Prosser.

crap I'm home sick with a economic stimulus check... Lenovo plus the extra hard drive and bay is on its way now... This is the perfect solution for me and means no more external drives on shoots. Looking forward to that one! Thanks for tipping me off and spending some of my money Barry! In reality though it was time for a new laptop anyways as the wife and I share my "work" one and now she can just have her own. And all for less than $1500. Not too shabby.

Lenovo took over the IBM product line and the IBMs always rated near the top as a rugged dependable laptop. I took my Toshiba in for repairs a year ago and I asked the guys that repair all the retailer claims [Best Buy, Circut City, Microsoft, etc...] what's the best laptop, "Lenovo" hands down.

Hi,
Go to the Lenovo website and search for notebooks with "dedicated graphics card", that will give you two groups, Nvidia or ATi. Go with the Nvidia, there are only like 5 choices with the nvidia.
