Led Lights

I don't mean the camera-light, but these sweet light panel, although I've seen that it's only for the US yet.

Richard, will you bring anything like it to the market?

Yes, this is completely different than the MicLight. This is a bank of 500 LED's and they claim to have a longer throw than flo's.

I actually have predicted to myself that LED's would at some point make a major displacement of tungsten hot lights and even flo's and that somebody would get around to making one of these.

I'd love to see it in action and how it compares to a two or four bank of 55 watt flo's. Very cool, no pun intended.

Somebody order one and invite us over to play with it!

Of course I've got a panel. Doesn't everyone? ;-) It's just not ready for release yet. That pesky fixture case that people demand to make a complete product is missing...

I've also been playing with this 60w LED but its not cost effective to do anything with for now:

Yes I know that product flolights is selling and where they got it--but didn't know flolights were carrying it until now. I could sell it too if I wanted. I thought I could do better than that though. I have the above panel I designed a while ago but too many things going on right now and like I said, it still lacks a few things to make it a complete product. Only a circuit board, leds and dimmer right now and it's draw is 25w of power. The throw is very good I will say. It's a rectangular panel with 420 LEDs (11" x 5") but it actually produces a round spot of light which is very very bright.

Also needs a battery unit too as most expect to have battery operation on a panel. Even the product in question on the flolights page does not have a battery so it would need to be engineered to meet full expectations for an LED panel. Another reason I rejected it. Also their panel doesn't have a dimmer but its not so hard to do. They've got bank selects on it which seems strange for an LED product. Chinese companies seem to be challenged by dimming LEDs and don't understand it but its really pretty simple when you get down to it. Most all the chinese products like this don't have dimming.

I don't believe the claims though that this Flolight product is equivalent of a 500w light. That would mean that the LEDs together were functioning at 250 lumens per watt (considering 40w draw on this panel and 10,000 lumens normal output for a 500w tungsten bulb). Impossible by today's standards. The best in a laboratory is 110 lpw and thats experimental stuff not out on the market yet. A good estimate is that it probably puts out about 2000 lumens. To compare, a 2 bank 55w flo unit puts out a little over 6000 lumens so you would need 3 of these panels (IMHO) to equal a 2x55 unit.

By all means I hope someone gets one to test and compare but its a bit pricey at $399 though. Maybe Kelly should get one so we can hear about the test ;-)

Muroshi,
Check out the Zylight. Not only can u switch between 3200K and 5600K. They are dimmable and they have a color mode. Fluorescent lights are cool, but I personally prefer LED over things like the Flolight because LED bulbs will last a lot longer and stand up to a lot more wear and tear. Check out the Zylight Z50 (160 deg throw) or the brand new Z90 (130 deg throw). I have my Zylight and with my articulating arm from Zacuto, my Zylight has become an essential part of my kit!

Hope this helps. Check em out

I know of zylight, I think they are great for acents, but a little pricey for my budget. Maybe I will get one later down the road though. From the lumen numbers Richard droped around I probably will go with fluos. I hope Richards will produce some portable 4-banks soon. Nontheless, LEDs will be the future.

Hey I look at it this way. Zylights are less expensive than Lite Panels. But why can't lite panels have all the features zylight's do? who knows. I see your point on cost though! Fight the man! Pick the money tree

They're coming in November for folks in the USA. But if you're in Switzerland you may get them a bit earlier. This stuff will be ready by the end of October and everyone in Europe, Australia, etc. should already be ordering so we can plan your order and shipping now. Everyone in the USA has to wait until our big shipment arrives in November then we ship individual orders via UPS point to point within the USA.

Yes I have left several messages with Richard to see when all this talk will actually produce a product that I can buy. Take that the right way- its meant as a compliment.
I am interested in his plastic 2x 55 kits and was told oct 15th? Probably cant wait that long- Richard what products do you have right now that are available?

Many parts on this are aluminum, but you can't make a fixture that's 8 lbs with tubes with only aluminum. In fact, no one has any kind of 4x55 fixture in the 8lbs range with tubes that I've been able to find. This seems to be the lightest and most sturdy on the market now. Even lighter than a Diva 400 which is listed as 14lbs without tubes. My customers were asking for lighter weight and I gave it to them.

The shell and barndoors are made of 6mm thick polycarbonate corrugated roofing material which is listed as 80 times as hard as glass. You can hit it with a hammer and it might make a small dent but the hammer bounces off.

There are aluminum parts on the inside and end caps with an aluminum lollipop on the back as well for all the important skeleton parts that provide the real strength in this unit. Even the reflectors are a bit thicker aluminum than normal. There are also aluminum edge protection extrusions around the plastic at key points to protect it further. If I made the shell and barndoors out of the thickness of aluminum necessary, that would have increased the weight by quite a bit.

Are they dimable and will ballasts be included?

Ballasts are included and hidden inside the fixture with all the rest of the wiring. The model you are looking at in the picture is dimmable and you can see the dimming dial on the side as well as bank selects so you get both bank select and dimming.

The dimmable model has PMD at the end of it's model number to designate it as such -- hence CL-455PMD. The non-dimmable (with just P at the end of the model number) is CL-455P.

The dimmable versions will be a bit higher in price than the non-dimmable reflecting the more expensive dimmable ballasts used. At least I give a choice for a more economy non-dimmable model whereas you don't have a choice in some of the higher end portables out there--they are generally only dimmable and always expensive.

I haven't posted the product pages on the website because I'm waiting for one more thing to come back so I can make some final product pictures. Here are some prices:

CL-255P $275
CL-255PMD $369
CL-455P $425
CL-455PMD $585
CL-655P $588
CL-655PMD $799

The P versions are non-dimming / PMD are dimming. One set of bulbs in 3200K or 5600K are free. All plastic portable fixtures include the lollipop mounting but not the special stand adapter which is an extra option--see below in options for that.

Other options:

CL-MPSA $29 (sturdy lollipop to baby/junior stand adapter)
CL-255EGG $19 (2x55 eggcrate)
CL-455EGG $29 (4x55 eggcrate)
CL-655EGG $39 (6x55 eggcrate)
CL-LS2 $59 (portable stand good for plastic units and designed to fit in the cases)
CL-BC2 2x 55w bulb carrying case $15
CL-BC4 4x 55w bulb carrying case $20
CL-BC6 6x 55w bulb carrying case $25

Everything begins with talk. We have the metal studio model CL-255s and CL-655s in stock now if you can't wait. CL-455s won't be back in stock until the same time frame as the other products. You can order directly on the web site and even gives UPS shipping quotes for different types of shipment (ground, next day, etc.) in checkout.

Nice to hear all that.
What's an eggcrate? How much will the shipping for a 4-bank to Switzerland be?

This is an eggcrate:

It's just an attachment or filter which can be used to modify the light and guide it even more where you want it. Don't know what shipping to Switzerland is right now--China is on a national 7 day holiday that ends on Sunday so things are a bit shutdown here right now for trying to get shipping quotes.

Why don't you contact me at richard@coollights.biz on Monday and we'll get that for you.

Richard,
I'm very interested in your product now that I see the versatility. Send me a PM, I have something to ask you.

Very very cool stuff Richard. Once you're over the hurdle of getting this line of products to market, are you going to be taking any of it on the road to show it off at trade shows (NAB and its lesser-known brethren)?
