Leaving the DVX turned on for extended periods of time

Hey guys. I'm wondering if it's in any way BAD for the camera for it to be left on for extended periods of time. It's not recording anything - it's just on being basicaly idle. LCD closed. The reason I would want it to be on is for use of the microphone. If this is in any way bad it would be great to know. I don't want to screw up a piece of $3,000 equippment when I could have just as well used a $20 headset from walmart. Thanks guys!

Maybe up to 24 hours (let's say I forget to turn it off when I go to bed).. and let's say that happens a few times a month. I know that sounds really stupid. but Id like to know anyway.. haha. Thanks.

the DVX shuts itself off when it's idle too long and not recording anything. but will stay on in VTR mode.

im no technician, it would probably wear out if you were actually doing something with it but just leaving it on shouldn't do any serious damage. I mean come on...
in anycase, it all depends on whether you can shut off the idling.. at this point i haven't tried. not sure if you can...
but perhaps that is a warning of the danger in leaving it on too long. maybe you'll wear out the CCD's if it's watching one thing too long and will leave an imprint on the chip. *shrug*

I dont know why you would even think about trying it. Leaving your DVX turned on for a week!? Im going to have nightmares about what could happen if you did that...Wouldnt you rather just spend $20 for headphones rather than risking damage to a very expensive machine?

hahaha I don't plan on leaving it on for a week. Believe me. I know it sounds VERY stupid - because it is. I don't plan on using it as a mic very often at all - thanks for your help guys

Im no expert with camera equipement but I leave my pc turned on permanently. Although its not such an issue these days, but your PC will work hardest when it starts up, cold circuits suddenly expanding with heat, thus turning on and off can wear components more than leaving it turned on 24/7

I believe the user hours (the clock in the menu) will get pretty high and will affect re-sale value.

If the tape transport is not running (stand by for recording) the should be no wear on the camera. Just keep the lens cap on to prevent any possibility of "burn" on the ccd:s it it is possible at all.

How does use hour counter work on DVX100? Is it the power-on time or the tape transport running time?

The hour counter racks up whenever power is on and a tape is in the camera. I'm really confused, why do you need to leave the camera on to use the microphone for a long period of time?

If you want to record digital audio for 24hrs (or whatever), you should use propper equipment for that.
The simplest is MiniDisc Recorder with mic.
More serious is Condenser Mic (I presume you want to record ambient sound), LapTop, Audio Editing Program and lot of hard disk space:)
This way you can leave it running for a long time without changing the tape every hour :)
