Learning Express Pro

I've also used the online course at:

http://apex.vtc.com/avid-xpress.php

The course costs $30 (which entitles you to a month of online courses in their database, including a lot of other useful media software courses). Anyway, this Avid course is conducted by Avid guru James Monohan (and I also have his book Avid Xpress Pro). It's basic but clear and very useful. I taught it myself this way.

thanks dakotapod. I have been editing with Vegas for a year, so I am not a total newbie. I will check out the desktop images link. If I could find something similar to the trish and chris meyers books for AE I would be pleased as punch!

If you know how to mark in and out with Vegas, you should be able to use Avid. It's the same procedure, but, the only difference is the trim (single or dual), and the splice and overwrite mode. Once you understand those thing, you'll be able to quickly understand how to use the Avid interface.

I suggest the Free DV tutorial

(Already mentionned above)

Yes, I can use Vegas fairly well. It is just getting up with some of the basics with Avid. For example, it took me awhile to figure out what all the buttons do for each track in Avid (e.g., turn on/off the track in monitors, turn on/off sync, solo, etc). I just got the Avid, so I think I am expecting to pick it up right away, but when I think that it took me awhile to get Vegas, I realize that I just have to be more patient (I just got Avid Express Pro less than a week ago). Thanks all for suggestions above.

That's why I do recommend the online tutorials at http://apex.vtc.com/avid-xpress.php

I had never used an editing program before, and I taught myself Avid Xpress in a couple of days. If you already know other NLE software, the online tutorials will be good for you, covering all the basic buttons and concepts (going into much greater depth than the free Avid tutorials, which I also went through).

Jumping from Vegas to Avid is a big jump. The Avid adopt his own philosophia and you must follow that guide, otherwise you'll be not happy *LOL*

I remember when I started to learn Avid Xpress DV 3.5 for the first time. On the tutorial manual, some students remplace de Xpress by Dpress :) *LOL*

Don't worry, after reading the FreeDV tutorial, you will be able to use Avid from the base. If you have questions (if unanswered before), feel free to post on the forum.

OK guys, thanks much for the help. I will probably try the online tutorial first, and go from there. I am a bit anal in that I want to learn everything I can about the software, so I may be at this for awhile :-)

I just checked out the online tutorial course and this is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Thanks so much for your help!!
