Learning Curve on the Merlin

Hey Guys!

I just bought the merlin having it rush delivered here, Id like to try and use it approximately 1 day after I get it.

I know people say it takes a while to get truly comfortable with a merlin

But would I be able to atleast get it working somewhat, where I could film in field and have a reasonably steady shot?
Any tips on learning, does it come with great instructions?
Essentially Im getting it thursday night, and I'll be filming friday night.
I'm hoping it wont be too hard to balance.

Another questoin if you guys dont mind, I was about to order a spiderbrace 2 for the camera as well because my arm has been dieing in field. I hear the merlin folds into a shoulder brace? Is it good enough? Should I still buy the Spiderbrace?

Thanks in advance!

You won't be ready.

It takes much more than 24hours to learn Steadicam - on any rig.

When you get it, spend the evening watching the DVD & reading the manual to get you set up. You should be able to get it ballanced. If you spend some hours on Friday learning how to control it and move with it, if you have talent you'll be able to shoot with it.

It won't be jittery. But it will be a little all over the place, it won't be level or "stable". Learning to get proper control over the rig will take you a few more days to a week. And after that 'mastering' it will take longer as you perfect the skill of course.

Ther Merlin does fold into shoulder mode. It works like a shoulder brace, but not as well as a unit that has been designed purly for that purpose. (As is to be expected). It's more of a shoulder mode for your camera than a great handheld camera mount & grip.
