Leaked pictures and video of the new Nikon mirrorless full frame camera

The memory card choice does put me off a bit, as does the lack of a headphone jack, fully articulating LCD and 10 bit internal. But those are more annoyances than anything. I've owned and shot with plenty of cameras that don't have those things. I'm in the studio today shooting video with a couple Canon 6D cameras for example.

I'm curious about its weather sealing, does it have any?

Meant to have the best weather sealing in a FF Mirrorless?

And it does have a headphone jack.

This is a deal breaker for me. Just like the Sony mirrorless. I need a camera that can record long interviews and performances.

Atomos Ninja V to the rescue!

I personally don't think so...I watch hours and hours of Vimeo and YouTube every week and it's a jungle...absolutely no right or wrong anymore.

So many different looks.

One may have the "perfect" grade and half of the audience may be watching it on monitors with the tint @ -40, ha.

I'm beginning to think for the first time in my life that audio is more important than video.

Of course it is ;-)

The video is 4K.

If you're on a Mac and using Safari or Firefox, it's not supported.

Try Chrome and you'll see the 4K "capabilities".

thank you and your right. i often use chrome or firefox but happened to be watching last night on Safari. thanks for the reminder!!

Coming from stills and shooting raw since the d70 or something in maybe 2003 I don’t see why stills togs are seen a soft sell.

Probably because most still photographers who are just getting into video or who don't do high production value narrative work have pretty amazingly low standards for video, both the technical quality of what the camera records and the skills involved in editing narrative.

NEF video would finish the race- and leave Alexa in the gutter

Even Nikon would probably be smart enough to price a camera that could record NEF video at around $30K, and it's also unlikely that anyone who could afford one would even notice. Nikon's VERY late to the motion pictures world.

Nikon's new mirrorless does seem pretty appealing though. I don't care about its video capabilities, since I already have a dedicated cinema camera, but as a stills camera I'd actually consider it, since I don't have many Sony specific lenses.

Yes, in stills two card slots for simultaneous "record" is the norm on the professional side, but as far as video, my C300 is the only camera I have that can record internally to two cards at the same time for a back-up. My VariCam with five slots cannot and my F55 with two slots cannot. But these cameras are writing to proprietary professional media and not off-the-shelf consumer media. Second but, BUT I'd love to have the option on every camera for dual-record internally.

Given the manner in which cards fail, I am increasingly becoming jittery about shooting in camera with one single card. For paying clients, it has to be double slot recording which the C300 provides.

Nikon dropped the ball big time with only one slot. Now Delkin is saying they will replace your bad card in 48 hours !!!. Tell that to the wedding party !

"Nicely timed to coincide with the launch of the Nikon Z series cameras Delkin has announced its own line of premium XQD cards that come with a 48hr replacement service. "

For still yes, for video I would say no, because you could easily put a Ninja V with it. The size and weight would be less than a traditional Dslr like a Nikon d7500 and a flash. You would get the internal recording and on the Ninja SSD. A Z6 and Ninja V would be a very portable and powerful combo which would be less than $ 3k.

^ That sample makes me doubt the dynamic range of these cameras even more. That booth shouldn't require a lot of DR to shoot, but still every single shot in that video is clipping either the highlights or the shadows (and some shots manage to clip both).

I think that booth had horrific halogen spots - a classic problem. a pan down would have shown this.

Clearly none of the YouTubeerati who have been given the camera really have a clue.

I’m far from convinced that Nikon have a clue either.

I’m not sold or not sold at this point.

A fmount adapter with Nd would instantly garner my interest.

The dust has settled on this a bit - not that there are any samples yet!

Single card - well no worse than the FS7 which is highly respected camera used all over the world.

Now it seems that Sony outspec them.. but

My experience (as a nikon user) is that sony and gh4 have impossible menues.

GH4 - when placed in stills mode went to 50p the other day - no idea how to kill that for example - my mates GH4 had focus bash anabled when you turned the focus wheel - again - no idea how to kill that. These things have to be intuitive. My NEX5 which I think has a typical sony menu.. well the only time I used it under pressure (as D cam on a feature in a very small space) I could not work out how to change the WB -
Canon and Nikon have a WB button, you push and then spin the dial.

I can use canon and nikon when I have 30 people waiting to shoot.

Now Im trying to extract myself from brand ness. I wonder..

Sony vs Nikon - how many button pushes to go from 4k25p to 120HD (if even possible on the same card)
Sony - how change WB and ISO - I assume simple on a nikon

Nikon.. ISO at 100 vs Sony at 1000, well way less ND fiddling - my experience with sensitive sony is that you need so much ND that the picture goes green!

Nikon and a Lens mount with ND and a 24-105/4 (not too terrible a lens) could be very appealing... even if the image/specs are 20% down on a Sony.

The Sony menus are awful, but it has plenty of customizable buttons and Fn slots. I can get to the WB or ISO settings with just a button, but I'll usually do it through the Fn menu anyway. Changing resolution and frame rates is the only thing that requires me to hit the "menu" button, but that also means that if I hit menu it goes directly to the place where you change resolution and frame rates.

Then again, I saw a preview of the p4k menus and well, you really can't beat something that has been designed with video primarily in mind. It made me drool.

Uh, comparing 8 years old camera with just announced camera is really stupid.

As you said, you are Nikon user. So you like Nikon's menu and Nikon's layout. And it is absolutely normal that Sony menu seems weird to you. I always laugh when some Canon, Nikon, RED, BM etc user screems that Sony menus are bad. Of course!! It is something different, same applies to NLE. If you are used to edit in FCPX, you will find Premiere stupid and vice versa.

I am Sony user for ages and I have never had problem with their menus. Now, with custom menu and many Fn buttons there is no reason saying you need to dig into menu at all.

I have shot with multiple brands (including Nikon) and I must say only BM menus are awesome, rest is about getting used to it.

I will try to show on A7III "how many clicks you need", BUT it really can be configured in many ways:
- WB - one push of custom button
- ISO - wheel
- 4k25p to 120 hd - yes, you can record it on the same card. The fastest way is just change mode from VIDEO to S&Q with dial on the top of the camera.

Nikon+ND adapter+24-105 can be done on Sony too - no win for Sony or Nikon here. (if there is already ND adapter for Nikon)

As I said.. Im trying to keep an open mind.. while balancing the need under pressure to be able to react instantly with not being a fanboy to a specific brand.
I get along OK with canon, my BMC micro drives me nuts.. my fingers are too big for the buttons :)

On my FS7, I only use Record, S+Q, and volume pots. (and manual iris) - basically I dont interact with the menu at all, but mixing 4k and HFR is too slow to do under pressure, pushing me to HD.

- WB - one push of custom button

With Canikon you hit the WB button and then scroll through kelvin on a wheel? - is this possible - I have no idea where Kelvin are on my GH4 and Nex5

- ISO - wheel

good :)

- 4k25p to 120 hd - yes, you can record it on the same card. The fastest way is just change mode from VIDEO to S&Q with dial on the top of the camera.

Yep I saw the SQ on the dial, nice. (as a side note the GH4 dial lock drives me nuts and I have no idea how to change the framerate, HFR is piss_poor anyway)

with the FS7 120 and 25p are 'NTSC and PAL' which means a huge menu dig.

Nikon+ND adapter+24-105 can be done on Sony too - no win for Sony or Nikon here. (if there is already ND adapter for Nikon)

Is there a behind the lens ND for sony? - with native lenses there would be no space. With G lense and Z mount there is space.

What about digital punch in.. should be one button?

There is for example this adapter. Kipon
AF will not be good as native lens but I don't believe mirrorless Nikon will have same AF performance with adapted Nikon lenses as native Nikon's lens. If yes, I will be really surprised!

I really hope Sony, Panasonic, Canon or Nikon will bring some form of ND for mirrorless cameras. This would be huge for me. I would switch to any system just for this..

About WB, when your dedicated WB button is pressed, there is little menu with AWB, WB presets, 3 stored custom WBs and customizable WB (Kelvins and tint).

I think better would be go into store a try it yourself. You know much better what is good. Just one note, this is how I configured my camera and you can have it in different way.

FWIW I went to Fixation today to a Nikon run hands on preview of the Z7. Unfortunately there was only one camera and a lot of people wanting to play with it. I looked through the menus briefly and saw exactly what I see on my D4 and D800. Apparently almost anything can be assigned to the touch screen in any order one likes so all one's immediate needs could be addressed using the touch screen.

I was told that the 4K bitrate of 144Mbps is in fact a constant rate and not a variable rate that such an odd number would suggest.

I tried my Sigma 24 Art with the FTZ adaptor briefly and the AF seemed just fine. Not exactly scientific but it worked which was what wanted to check. There was no perceptible play between lens adaptor and body. All felt very secure and robust.
The rep also confirmed that Z7 & 6 preorders will ship with a 64GB XQD card but no reader.

I had no trouble at all reaching the custom buttons on the front which seems to have been a problem for some people. I think my hands are pretty average, not fat, not skinny!

I have barely looked at an EVF on any camera but was pleasantly surprised by how pleasant it was to look at. Having said that I was very taken aback to see the the banding move across the screen under Fixations fluorescents. The rep seemed to think that having to shoot at a 50th to deal with it was not an issue because the body has in body stabilisation. He needs educating on that point for sure!

The rep claimed that they couldn't put 10 bit internal recording in because of heat issues. What we need now is an Atomos 4k Ninja Star to velcro to the top of it to get the 4K 10 bit N-log.

He said it cannot record internally AND externally at the same time in any mode.

The new lenses felt very plasticy.

I would have liked way more time with it but I think my preorder for a Z6 will stay.

I just have a hard time taking Nikon seriously considering their lens mount and lack of professional ENG or cinema camera market share. I'm sure its a great camera for those that never plan on moving beyond a DSLR form factor camera but I just find the future too limiting by investing in Nikon. At least m43 has SpeedBooster options to help bridge that gap.

I'm fairly new to video but I need a b cam to go with my FS5 and was looking at an A7lll but I am very heavily invested in NIkon stills gear so the fact that the Z's with the adaptor will work seamlessly with all my Nikon and third party lenses was too much to ignore. I also need the silent shooting for film set stills where the AF is also needed. I would have had to buy some Sony lenses had I gone with the A7lll. The only thing I will miss I think is Sony's eye AF. Whether I can match the Nikon Z video to the Fs5 is another matter! I do BTS video on film sets as well and sometime s the Fs5 is actually too big. If I can make decent video and stills from that small a form factor as the Z6/7 I will be very happy.
