Leaked: new Sound Devices MixPre-10T is coming soon?!?!

I welcome the new product from Sound Devices. But at the same time I would hate to see them get caught up in a race to the bottom. Maybe it's because I'm a little old, and remember the good old days when you didn't heed iso's on every single dog fart. Switching to crotchety old man voice.... Back in my day a sound mixer WAS a sound mixer. We mixed everything to a single channel Nagra. And we liked it! OK, got that out of the way. The point being, I wonder which market is steering their boat these days? Is it the high end professional sound mixer, reality TV, or possibly the low end indie film crowd which demands poly recordings of a ridiculous amount of channels even when their budget and experience level falls way short of supporting such a work load? I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.

Dave

Remember when Sound Devices first came to market they were the low priced underdog who were undercutting the top end!

For instance the Sound Devices MP-1 was cheaper than the IDENTICAL product from Shure! (because Sound Devices made both of them, that is why it was identical)

- Initially, the 633 did not have Dugan auto mix either, it was added in a firmware update a while afterwards. The same may be the case with the 10T... I'll see how much info I can get out of Jon T. at the upcoming AES.

Would be *amazing* if the MixPre-10T got that!

Any one noticed anything that indicates that the newly announced Sound Devices MixPre-10T would work with the Timecode Systems Limited products? As would be nice if the MixPre-10T can work with the :wave, like the:wave does currently with the 633/664/688. Would be a major feature to convince me to buy a Sound Devices MixPre-10T

As if the MixPre-10T got these two things (automix + :blink) then it would move it into the territory of a no brainer must buy for me! :-o

Doubtful. There's got to be something that distinguishes the higher-tier products. I wouldn't discount it for this reason, though. It does have two dedicated BNC connections, TC in and TC out, so it can sync through Timecode Systems or Ambient wireless devices. With the Wingman app from Sound Devices, and a small USB dongle on the recorder, you still have all the metadata, record, track arm, etc. control through a mobile app.

And the Shure FP24 was the Sound Devices MixPre.

Something caught my eye in the article. I didn't realize the 633 included the Dugan automix. Very cool. Dan Dugan is a very interesting guy who's shop is almost walking distance from where I was living in SF. The Auotomix was a hardware box that he sold for mostly live situations where you had a conference with a bunch of people miced up and it would auto mute mics people weren't using. It's more than that but that was a big part so the mixer wasn't tying to guess who was going to talk and who wasn't. Having all up and live the whole time is a time bomb.

Anyway one of his other claims to fame is being the first person (at least documented in the US) to get a credit as a "sound Designer". He is also one of the few folks in the Bay Area that is authorized to repair and maintain NAGRA analog recorders.

OT but...

I used to use a Shure mixer, (the model # escapes me, this was in the early 90s) many years ago, that did the same thing, I wonder if Shure licensed the technology from him or ripped him off?

Dugan automix is different than the standard Sound Devices automix. In fact, Sound Devices mixers actually allow you to choose which type of automix you want to use. As far as I can tell, the standard automix is just a noise gate. It might also have some type of adaptive muting on channels for noise bleed into a microphone in close proximity. Dugan automix attempts to maintain a noise floor by keeping channels partially open when the noise level on any single channel is not high enough to force the other channels to be muted. It is pretty seamless as long as everybody has similar noise floors. For certain projects, it can save massive amounts of time in post.

- Most likely the Shure SCM 410 / 810.
I used a Shure 810 for a few times that a cam op had when I was recording legal edu seminars. It actually worked pretty well. Not perfect, extraneous noise would sometimes 'confuse' it. I preferred to mix manually with an eight channel console type board. (I usually fed the house sound system via the pre-fader sends.) I did those for quite a few years.

I purchased the MixPre-6 for use in SFX field recording for sound design, but again I kind of wish I'd known this was coming down the pipe.

People have been criticizing Panasonic for their partial reveal at NAB for the EVA-1. They are going to ship early November. That's like a 6 month lead time. If Sound Devices did the same, they would have picked up you as a customer for a more expensive model. Silly them.

Not sure they lost me as a customer for the 10T. I may still get one. It can pull most of the weight as the larger mixer/recorders at a fraction of the price (and size). I just got back from several days in Nova Scotia, and it was great having my MixPre-6 with me to be able to grab some sounds of the coast on the Bay of Fundy. I had two mics with me: a Shure VP-88 and an NTG-3, both with pistol grips. It's a great setup for that kind of work.

Sound Devices also played this in a really smart way. It suddenly appeared with no warning, and only weeks before the announced shipping date. How many camera manufacturers have debuted new models at NAB only to be anywhere from 8 to 18 months later actually shipping? I've watched the threads following those cameras, and people jump ship after a while when pre-orders seem caught in a neverending wait time. The 10T is supposed to start shipping in just a week or so (they said late October), and if SD meets that time frame they will have played this brilliantly.

I requested a review copy of the MixPre-10T but SD said that they already have a yuge backlog of requests for these so I am going to have to wait to try it out and write about it. Looks like a sweet machine.

Alex, quick detour, but what pistol grips are you using? What pistol grips would you recommend?

Good looking out fellas. I've been looking for a pistol grip for my shotgun and haven't found much. Cheers!
