LCD resolution and clarity? whats wrong?

Question. Why didn't Panasonic put a decent quality lcd screen on the HVX200 like the FX1? If it's HD, surely putting a hi-res lcd screen on the camera would make sense? The camera is way more expensive than the FX1, so was it a cost cutting issue?

I tried to take a photo of both the DVX and the HVX LCD menu screens but no luck. I cannot get a focus that close with my digital camera.

Can someone with both the DVX100 (non B) and THE HVX at least check this for me.

Look at the menu screens of both side by side and tell me if the DVX text is not more defined or crisper. I do notice the HVX almost looks like they pumped the thickness of the font up a little and maybe they added a drop shadow effect to make it more legible. In my opinion it looks slightly blurred.

If someone looks at an original DVX LCD (not the DVX100B) and sees no difference then my HVX LCD is not performing optimally.

Also....when I touch the LCD (not the screen) to pivot or rotate I see little LCD type anomalies like pressure on the edges that causes that little "oily" effect. YOu know when you kid pushes on your laptop screen cause it looks all cool? I don't recall seeing that on the DVX LCD in all my years of using it. Maybe I have a loose connection.

Believe me the last thing I want is to have to exchange it for another. So hopefully all of your insights will help me determine if it functioning properly.

So the only "kinda" scientific thing you can try for me is to compare the text on the DVX (non 100B) and the HVX in the main menu screen. If you don;t notice the DVX being much more clear then there might be an issue.

Thanks All!

I am otherwise delighted with this amazing toy!

Ok I just tested the pressure thing on the HVX and DVX and even a mild squeeze near the latch of the LCD send little LCD shock wave on the right and left edges of the screen.

Performing this same test on my DVX100 I cannot perceive but just a tiny LCD flutter or distortion.

I regularly see this when just pivoting the LCD on the HV200.....So can someone check that too? Maybe it is just a new model of LCD screen or maybe the LCD panel itself has a minor defect.

Thanks Again!

And Holyzoo....with all due respect if your HVX was looking much softer than your DVX I do think you would be inclined to "make sure" it is by design and not a potential problem with your unit.

Heh heh.. WRONG. And if you can't tell the difference, maybe it's time to see an optometrist.

Let me re-reply to this. I thought you were saying that the HVX *footage* was softer than the DVX. You're just talking about the LCD. My apologies here. Yes.. The LCD looks softer in HD on the HVX LCD, than SD on the both HVX LCD and DVX LCD.

Bummer? Maybe. End of the world. Surely not. I think this is just the way it is with that low a res of the LCD. Use Focus Assist or an external monitor. Or wing it like I did on the Basketball footage. No focus assist used at all.

I understand 7.5 ire is the black format setting in Japan.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, it has been known to happen...I remember onece when I was seven years old that I thought I made a mistake. How more wrong could I have been?

But seriously, I believe 7.5 is the black format setting for here in the USA, and 0 is the setting for Japan. Anything analog captured below 7.5 here is "illegal", so we run from 7.5 to 100. (That's why the NTSC color bars have that very close-looking black stripe in the pluge. It is 7.5 as opposed to the one to its left which is 0. You are supposed to make the two match, so that 7.5 registers as black.) When these marvelous DV instruments came to us from Japan, they set them to their standard of 0, and a lot of us have been using it. But that is why there is a "setup" setting in most cameras to allow you to return it to the "proper" USA standard of 7.5. NOW THEN, having said that, when you get to HD, we are talking a different animal, and that is why we are seeing 0 as well as 7.5.

NOW THEN, having said that, it is time of uncle Barry or Uncle Bob Diaz to step in and correct all of us.

That's great stuff, Holyzoo. Nice to see such beautiful color and slow motion.

What a camera!

You are correct. In broadcasting there is NTSC-M (7.5 IRE USA), NTSC-MJ (0 IRE Japan) and PAL (0 IRE)

Exactly! At least you confirmed what I am seeing in the LCD. Sorry I wasn't clear when I made the statement. So as long as others are seeing a softer image in the LCD when in HD mode then I am not so worried about it.

However when focusing in HD without the Detail or FOcus assist I do feel like I need an optometrist! But when I have the DVX next to the HVX and can focus with ease on the DVX I know that is not the issue. In my honest opinion I cannot see shooting footage with the HVX without using detail enhancements.

Having said that if I use the Focus assist and get a perfect focus and then turn off the focus assist the iamge in the LCD looks soft and I cannot tell if it is focused or not. I will be trusting the focus assist a lot!!!

Could someone please check the LCD distortion problems I mentioned above when turning the LCD panel?

Oh, I wouldn't either. That's just asking for trouble. On mine the EVF DTL button is practically glued "on".

On the DVX you're looking at 350,000 pixels being displayed on a 200,000 pixel LCD. So it's about 1.75:1. On the HVX you're seeing 1.4 million pixels being displayed on a 210,000 pixel display. That's a ratio of more like 7:1! There's no way you can make accurate focusing on any of these HD cameras without some sort of detail-based focus assist. The Sony & Canon and HVX also offer the magnified view, but I'll tell you what, the EVF detail / peaking makes that way more useful too.

In short: put EVF DTL on, and never take it off, if you intend to try to focus a 1-million or 1.4-million-pixel image on a 210-thousand-pixel LCD. You have to take advantage of the tools they're giving you or it just won't work.

Regarding the 7.5 thing -- be aware that it will never record 7.5 to the card. In the menus the P2 0/7.5 setting only affects the analog outputs. You'll always record 0 setup to the cards.

Man, yes! I hadn't even tried the EVF yet. Wow. That makes a huge difference in HD focusing!

Hey Holyzoo.....to put my mind at ease can you try pushing on and around the LCD and see if it causes little ripples of distortion? On mine when I even tilt it up or down or apply simply enough pressure to move it I get little "shockwave" distortions like when you press on a laptop lcd with your fingers.

I have a feeling it is just the design of the new LCD screens but I want to make sure. Thanks Bro!

Sure it'll do the distortion dance just like any LCD you apply pressure to. Be gentle. ;)

If I push on the screen, you'll get the lcd distortion effect around the point, if you push on the plastic edge you'll get it too. But overall, it's not very noticeable. I don't get rippling if im rotating the lcd unless I'm apply pressure directly down on plastic edge. If you are getting it from casual movement but if it's very noticeable, to you, like rippling across your screen, there might be something there to have checked. But i never noticed it until you pointed it out.

Thanks Holyzoo. However the original DVX100 which I have also exhibits none of this. I thought I'd check.
