LCD Monitor for HDLink viewing

Hey all,

As I save up for a transition to HD once the HVX200 comes out, I believe I will go the route of using the Decklink HD card and HDLink for viewing purposes in editing. What are your thoughts on LCD monitor choice for this method. Blackmagic says they reccomend the Apple 23" HD Cinema Display and they built HDLink with that monitor in mind. But what do you guys think about using the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD instead ... just looking at options as I can get the Dell for a couple hundred dollars cheaper through a corporate discount (although I will probably still end up buying the Apple monitor cause I am one of their whores) ...

I have heard though that the Apple Cinema display has a problem with color accuracy (something about true black not being true and pinkish hue as well). Can anyone clarify?

I bought the 24 inch DELL.

More features, better warranty, larger size, and it's cheaper.
Not a tough decision.

For more info on Apple displays check here ---> Apple Forums

The HDlink claims to work with any LCD that's 1920x1200.
So it shouldn't be a problem.
I plan on using it.

We have a 23" Apple Cinema Display and the Dell 24" display, the Apple was cool when there wasn't anything else available, but the Dell Rocks and the price is right.

Well, after reading Mike's adventure at hdforindies.com I'd not touch a Dell with a 10ft barge pole! I'll stick to the Apple, which is working great here on an HDLink.

That's only one persons experience.
I've read about the negative experiences of over two dozen people with the Apple 23".

My DELL has been absolutely flawless.

I use the 23" Apple at work (the older model w/ the plastic case).
We've had some issues with it, the first one we received stopped working.

I agree that the new Apple displays look great, but the 23" has issues.
Performance is more important to me than looks.
Plus the DELL has a 3 year warranty.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the input guys ... so Graeme, how is the Apple working for you with HDLink? Any color calibration issues? I heard the new Apple displays have some sort of color issues ...

Oh, and I recently bought your filters ... they are great!

Seems like there's some misinformation flying about. The problems Mike Curtis was experiencing were related to the component video inputs on the Dell 2405. This has no bearing at all on the output of the HDLink unit from Black Magic which outputs the HD signal via DVI-D. The Apple 23" Cinema display doesn't even have component video inputs and Dell should have probably skipped them as well. From my initial evaluation of the 2405FPW, it seems likely that the composite, S-video, and component inputs rely on inexpensive circuitry to process and size the signal going into these inputs. Considering, the 2405FPW is an $800-$900 display, they probably didn't put much in the way of development resources or components into this function. This is in no way related to the image as delivered via DVI-D signal--which is excellent. Also, Dell has not "canned their tech support forums'. They closed some community forums they felt were being misused. Their product technical support forums are still open for business.

As far as the Apple Cinema displays, I also have a 20" model and I find it and all the Cinema displays to be excellent products. As for minor color casts, the HDLink software includes really nice software to customize the color and gamma output, so I can't see that as a big issue.

There is no such thing as the perfect monitor at any price, but I think both the 2405FPW and the Apple 23' cinema display are great products.
