FS7: LCD Monitor Broke in-transit.

Hello!

So, I just arrived on location and upon prepping my camera for the shoot, when I turned it on, the monitor has a sort of stress fracture and is completely black. I have contacted sony and they offered me a replacement:

Part number: A2067644A (SERVICE, PANEL BLOCK ASSY)
Price: $1,650.00

Does anybody here have a more cost-friendly solution? Maybe somewhere that could just replace the actual LCD screen in the monitor instead of replacing the entire unit?

I am not so worried about a quick solution, that has already been solved, but the LCD still needs to be replaced/fixed eventually.

Thanks! =)

Just buy an external monitor like a smallHD 501 or 502 or if on a budget the BM Video Assist

An external monitor is a decent solution unless you are doing hand held and then it becomes problematic IMO. You might try a Zacuto VF. I have one for my D800 and I like it fine. You'll need bracketry but it's very doable. Only downside is most 3rd party VF's are HDMI and that can get wonky real fast. I found a solution to keep the cable plugged in. There are options.

Not owning the "internal" monitor can cause havoc.

The other day my camera was rented and the operator fiddled with the output settings to try and get his SD directors monitor working from the other Sdi.

I think his big broadcast Sony has this function or 'video out' via bnc - So he was not being stupid - just trying to replicate his normal shooting setup

He managed to swich off external monitoring

At that point he was blind (he had also rented my dp502)

We had to attach and use the internal monitor to unfungle the settings

Had I not given him the internal monitor in the "spares" box there would have been real problems

Thanks for the replies everybody. I guess I should have mentioned I have an Odyssey 7Q with me. However, the only way to be able to use it or any external monitor is to enable the setting for external output...and to be able to do that I need to have my original menu to enable the setting. So as mentioned above, it is proving to cause some 'havoc'. Not allowing me to make an easy fix while on location. I have a rental from the US coming tomorrow evening.

I was quoted by Sony for a little under $500 to replace just the LCD screen myself. Does anyone know if there is any other source that I could order just the LCD part vs directly from Sony? It seems I am going to have to fix the monitor eventually, so trying to discover the cheapest solution to do so...

Thanks!

Isn't this an insurance thing?

Most likely, but I am just trying to avoid filing a claim if possible. Would rather save it for a more expensive claim should it ever happen.

And yes, looking like I will just spend the $500. Appreciate the help from everyone, just making sure there wasn't another option that I was overlooking.

It went from $1600 to $500? I'd jump on the $500 Sony LCD replacement. Nothing like the original. Didn't consider you wouldn't have menu viewing options. So you really do need to have a factor LDC replacement. $500 for parts and labor seems fair and then Sony warranty it for a bit.

Yup, I have to have a LCD replacement, at least to be able to turn on the option. Silly.

That's the thing, it's $500 to buy the LCD screen and replace it myself. That's how I understood it, but I will ask for clarification from Sony. If it's $500 w/ parts and labor...I'll definitely do that.Waiting to hear back from the airline before I talk to my insurance about covering for a new monitor.

To the question about how it broke: it broke in-transit at some point. It was in my pelican case, looked completely fine, turned on the camera and the screen was shattered internally. Like a pressure break of some sort and the entire monitor is black.

Thanks everybody, appreciate the input of ideas.

Did you have it mounted on the camera at the time ? Might be a good argument for removing from the camera during transits.

There's no right or wrong here. When I fly, I dismantle the camera completely and take it in the cabin along with all batteries. Lenses go in the hold. But that VF cable worries me greatly - it's only a matter of time before I plug it in and nothing happens due to a bent pin or knackered cable.

In a real emergency the Menu seems to show greyed out on a external monitor when in Thumbnail view. This can let you see where you have to navigate to and with a bit of luck when you exit thumbnail you can get the menu to turn on your external output. I now have external menu output in my favourites and can navigate to it blind if need be if you remember the series to get to where you want Eg: User menu Scroll 4 enter scroll 2 enter.

If Sony is buying the LCD from another vendor, you may be able to buy it cheaper from another source. Take it apart and see who made it and get the part number. Then do a search. It's probably Sony, but you might get lucky. Even if it is Sony, there may be someone selling it for less.
