LCD Matte for 2.35?

Hello,

I am going to shoot a project on Thursday and use the Matte in FCP to make it fit 2.35. I want a cover for the LCD screen though to help me with framing up the 2.35 while I am shooting.

I know some people use tape, but I couldn't think that would be very accurate.

Has anyone bought or made a cover to fit our DSLR LCD screens to help frame 2.35?

Otherwise I thought I might just make a image in photoshop the size of the LCD Screen and add bars to make the 2.35 ratio and cut it out myself. I am just a little unsure of what dimensions to use exactly for my t2i. especially since the 16:9 mode seems already to be slightly cropped with those light grey bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Anyway I hope this post wasn't confusing.

Any ideas??

tape can be very good for reference

if you take to focus box mark all the way to the top mark the bottom of the box
then you take it all the way down and mark the top of the box
you will get 2.39:1

yeah, tape works just fine. i just finished doing something in 4:3, i taped it up. takes a little bit of time to get right, but does the job.

I presume you can't get different aspect ratios grid lines on the LCD like the three thirds grid lines if you select it?

Thanks.

Not on the T2i - I spent some time trying to match the grid lines to a specific aspect ratio and nothing. It sure would be nice to have eh? :)

Maybe you can get different aspect ratio on the 7D/5DMII?

I thought I read that you can...I'll check again in the manual.

a guy I know used Scotch tape as frame line markers on his DVX. He had one set on there for 16x9 and one for 2.35:1. It worked well, Frame edges were well defined but he could still see what was at the edge of frame. Kind of a poor mans overscan.

That's clever! But won't Scotch tape leave residue on the LCD? I think gaffer's tape is a safer choice - am I mistaken?

Tape it might have to be. I did whip something up in photoshop i am going to try. If it works well I will put the file up here for anyone who would like to download and print it themselves.

I'm also thinking of making a prototype design that you can apply to the LCD screen in different aspect ratios. Much like a template of sort. Snapping in & out.

that would be great, Sure Shott for the download...hope it works!!!

Ok so I got the right dimensions it seems, however I realized my Matte covered the bottom of the frame which shows the controls. So i had to cover the bottom section with clear tape.

Any luck? I tried importing cropped footage from AE, even using the same name and type as the original clip. No luck

I ended up eyeballing the 2.35 and marking it by drawing a line across my cheap screen protector with a marker and a straight edge. It's pretty close.

I use tape on the lcd. An easy way to get the right points on the LCD is to just shoot whatever and bring the clip into your editor BUT LEAVE THE SAME CLIP ON THE CARD.

Then get you crop in the editor and compare the screen to the playback on the camera using the same clip. Bingo - easy.
