LCD flip function for EX1 !!

We where trying to find a solution to flip the image on the LCD screen. It cant be done in the software. so i was looking to get an external LCD ...
But really, the quality of the LCD screen on the EX1 is sooo good. I havent seen a match for it, unless your spending $ 2000. another problem is that you will lose the expand focus function on a external monitor. Aswell as having to use the analog outs (which sucks because of its placement) or carry more power adapters. And then .. where to put the LCD ?? On the flimsy hot shoe, where its in the way of the mic holder ?

But as i said, it was all too easy .. Just flip out the LCD. Take a precision Phillips screwdriver, and remove the plactic cap, thats over the mount for the LCD. Inside you will see a miniature switch which toggles the the LCD flip mode, used when turning the LCD towards the front. Now just jam the switch and the LCD is flipped .

Professional solution? No, but working. Step 2 will be to make a mini switch witch by passes the automatic one ... But really, i cant believe Sony is having us to go trough this .... Bot ok, this is not a professional camcorder ..

Clever suggestion, but I think some users on this forum would take issue with the statement "...not a professional camcorder." ;)

yes, i can understand that some people would take issue on that. I really didnt mean to offend people who own one. I must say, i love the picture comming out of it. Its truly a little wonderbox .. We do jobs with it now, so i guess its professional hahaha

Perhaps your "other" camera is a $125,000 F23? :)

Anyway, "professional" means you do something for pay. Since many of us film events for pay, we're using it for professional applications. And everything about the product (output) of the EX1 indicates professional quality, so I'd say it's a professional tool. Moutain climber teams are not going to take an F23, as it would be impractical, but the EX1, with it's reduced power needs, smaller size and simpler configuration make it the tool to use when a large camera won't fit.

hahaha .. i wish i had a f23 in my backyard !! .. but indeed we got the Ex1 for a project where we couldnt take a pro cam. Now i am doing a lot with it ..

With pro cam i mostly mean: professional battery mount (anton bauer/ v mounts), 2/3" ccd and broadcast lenses, 4:2:2 color, BNC analog outs, a professional viewfinder, shoulder mountable, and big rotary knobs for gain and color temp, time code on BNC outs, quick plate adapter on the bottom for larger tripods .. basically: not a handy cam.

But really, i didnt post this here to start a discussion about wheather the ex1 is a pro cam or not. When the PD150 came out, producers started calling that a pro cam too, and really a lot of street interview stuff has been recorded with them ... Festen is one of my favorite movies and it was recorded on a VX2100 i think .. I was blown away by the quality of the EX1 .. i love and yes its an professional tool for sure !! You can check out our site if you like, its in dutch tho .. but the films there range from Dvx100 to 35mm film .. www.defilmboetiek.nl

there a spoof of the terminater, it was made for a festival report. It was shot with an dvx100, 3 redheads, a smokemachine and an arnie look-a-like.

There is one of a guy running trough the street, thats an Dvx too .. Aswell as the one showing the beamers at the airport, and the guy walking with you allong the flat stairway ..

I havent put the EX1 stuff on there yet. But if you sent me an mail i can send you something i just recently done on the beach. We stood about 25 feet away from the girl, to get a good DOF. For the Wide opening shot, i have pulled the background a little out of focus in Shake. After that, i have made 2 slow zoom ins on the first two shots. Just verry plainly in Final Cut. The final got a bit of tweaking in Apple color .. I posted some set pictures from that shoot. Its a small set, but i loved the output ..

My mail is: j.damen@defilmboetiek.nl

I must say that its nice to be able to do side by side compairisons of camera outputs. Still 'what', you actually film is the determining factor for me. Good lighting, good angles and sound, production design actors etc are more important than a great camera in a lot of situations. I camera is just a tool ...

BTW, i have done some tests with Apple pro-res .. wow .. Im Impressed ..

You opened up a can of worms here. I think the difference between a professional camera and a non-professional camera is who buys it and what it's used for.

I don't know many average joes who buy the EX1, HVX200, DVX100, etc. I use my EX1 to make money with commercials etc. I don't use it to shoot home movies of the kids. That's the difference between professional and non-professional. It's not the technical specs you mentioned. How many friends and neighbors do you have who own a DVX100 to shoot home movies? My guess is ZERO.

I also don't like the "prosumer" tag that the companies have placed on these types of cameras. "Prosumer" basically means that it can be used for professional purposes yet affordable for the average individual.

Haven't tried it on the EX1 but on the Z1U you can make it flip by placing a small magnet over the switch. I used that technique when I had a Brevis pre-flip.
