LCD Display accuracy

A) If a monitor is not available to calibrate using the DVX's color bars: what settings can the LCD display be set to to be considered accurately representing what is being recorded to tape? (It would make sense that the factory released LCD settings could accuratley represent the scene being shot - no?)

B) For my upcoming doc shoot, I will have access to a 7" Nebtek onboard monitor. Should I calibrate using this monitor? Is it accurate?

C) In a doc run n' gun situation, I would like to make exposure calls referring to the LCD, not an external montitor (as this would be too cumbersome). How can I set the LCD display to give me full confidence in the info going to tape? I am hesitant to modify the LCD settings to the camera's color bars, as I have trusted the midpoint settings for brightness, etc. on the LCD display in the past, and it has given me aqccurate images.

Lil' help?

The idea is to use color bars to calibrate the monitor to the viewing conditions present. The problem with the EVF and LCD display is that it lacks a blue only feature, so you can't set color accurately. You can still get your white and black levels close, but neither is a substitute for a proper field monitor.

For your "run n' gun" project, I would recommend having a single brightness reference (perhaps the back of your slate) that you can use with the marker function of the DVX to get you close to a consistent exposure in different environments.

I haven't used the Nebtek monitor, but assuming that it has a blue only mode (and hopefully underscan as well) you could calibrate it with the DVX's color bars and then adjust both the LCD and EVF to match the Nebek as closely as you can.

i'm curious about this too.

i was thinking that i'd only use the assist more for my darks & lights & not so much for the color. is this correct?

thx

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding the viewing conditions, they are always the same with the EVF, as it is enclosed by plastic, no? Thus, shouldn't that remain a constant, and therefore be something one can judge exposure by? Doesn't it make sense that there is a standard setting for the EVF that will accurately render what is being recorded, and not something that fluctuates for any given reason?

I will still be using the LCD to make exposure calls. Even if I calibrate the external 7" monitor to the camera's color bars, matching the LCD to that is a relatively inaccurate process. Thus, I will be making exposure calls based on a an LCD screen that was adjusted by eye.

Also, is it actually so dangerous to not calibrate the LCD screen or monitor, and simply shoot with the factory settings on the EVF and LCD screen?

Thanks.
