GH2 LCD Color Gamma Shift : Try this

Time to put our collective heads in on this.

Can a few of you try this for me? I feel like my eyes are getting tired of doing tests. xD

Settings > Monitor > Saturation Dial all the way to the left, brightness dial all the way up.

Settings > LCD MODE > 1*

Close the LCD, repeat for the viewfinder.

I just did another round of testing to makes sure I wasnt' crazy: no MAJOR monitor shift when pressing record.

Second, it shows me pretty much exactly what 5DtoRGB gives me with REC709 > Full Range > Standard 1.0 Gamma

I'm using V1.1 firmware with Driftwood's Orion Patch.

Report back!

Okay I see a shift in noise when you press record, if there's a lot of noise or it's underexposed, but doesn't look like it's shifting colors or actual luminosity.

Anyone else?

Sorry Kholi, just commenting so I don't have to try and search for all of your posts when I finally get my gh2. You provide a lot of great information on here.

xD no problem at all.

This is what I sawr in my GH2 Viewfinder while trying to con someone into giving me food.

(no high res PNG sorry)

This is also what it looked like converted in 5DtoRGB, which was good because I purposely tried to avoid clipping the sky too badly. What I saw was pretty much what I got, then turned it into this really quick:

Just tried. I'm running the same patch is you.

Definitely shifts color way less than normal, but I can still see it switch from a slight pink tint to a slight green tint upon hitting record.

Still, big improvement.

I wonder if the color shift (minor at this point) is from the noise, which has its own color/hue. That's what it always looks like to me.

Haven't made any other adjustments to the monitor, though.

Could be. I only noticed a difference when my ceiling was in the shot. The first time, when I was just pointed at my wall/floor, I couldn't see any difference. I find the exposure and contrast looks really different the actual file, though. Unless you're comparing it to the way 5DtoRGB flattens the image ?

First few times I tried it, I was outside so there's not a lot of noise.

I am comparing it to 5DtoRGB's end result, which is pretty much the only thing I use.

What you COULD do is this: set up either LCD or Viewfinder for the image non converted, and the other for the maximum range in highs and lows. Kind of like a "raw" quick look so you can judge how much info you can eck out on either end.

That's a good idea... being able to adjust both is handy. How are you liking Orion? I know you've used a bunch of patches. This is the first real high end one that I've used to any degree. Are you finding it better than Quantum 9b?

I can't put my finger on it... but Orion is money. I dunno WHAT he did, something about the image is definitely better. Wish I could quantify that but having used V9b extensively Orion is definitely a keeper.

Yes I agree. I'd be really suprised if it was possible to eck out even more IQ than what I'm seeing with this.

Yeah Kholi just tried it. My findings are exactly as DBP described it. There was an ever so slight shift to the green once you hit record (and I mean slightly). The shift is nowhere as contrasty as it usually is so I'd say this is a big improvement. Thanks for the tip.

Excellent. That green shift is kind of annoying innit? I'm almost positive it's the noise, wish there was a way to kill that too. But I'll take this, as it's clearly gonna help exposing this thing properly.

Annoying? Oh sure. But I'll take this anyday of the week. I can certainly put up with this more than what I'm used to seeing. I'm going to do more tests myself but it's good to see the histogram not jumping leaps and bounds after I hit record (only slightly).

Running rocket V2, in my utterly unscientific test at 6400 ISO (eh, it's dark in here, and I feel lazy). Pointing at my coke on my dark wood desk, there was still a huge difference in the dark wood (crushes). I guess I should go try a better setup.

Glad you posted this. Just tried mimicking what you're doing, and now I am pretty damned sure that the biggest change is in recorded noise versus the "preview" noise.

The higher the ISO, the greater the shift in color. And you can see the noise going green to magenta @ 6400 ISO. At 200 the green shift is barely detectable when the sensor is exposed.

He mentioned that the actual scaling matrix has been modified now, and that -2 on sharpening may or may not be desirable with the new settings. This is really exciting to me, because the oversharpness of the GH2 in certain conditions was one of the few remaining things that bugged me about the camera visually. I've been perfectly happy with -2 recordings on Orion so far.

I've also noticed a minimal shift when properly white balanced off my gray/white card. Maybe these two elements together are a recipe for success.

I'm beginning to think so, and of course not going above 1600 ISO. LPowell, I think it was he, said that beyond 1600 it's just more gain (can't remember exactly what he said) but it looks about right. So basically, anything above 1600 you can do in post and get the same result?

Either way, low ISO's for life.

-2 works out really well. Especially when using Cinema or Standard. I should try Smooth now again to see what's changed.
