Lavalier connected directly to 5d Mark III

Hi all,

Till now i use to connect my lavalier with convertors to my 5d mark iii and was functioning properly. The pic of the lavalier is shown below.

As seen in the pic above, the lavalier takes the power from the AA battery. The lavalier has 3.5mm jack that connects to the AA battery unit, which has 6.35mm jack. Again i use 6.35mm to 3.5mm convertor to connect it into my 5d. So the lavalier has 2 convertors before the sound feeds into my 5d

Today, while on an interview shoot, somehow i had forgotten the 6.35 to 3.5 convertor. This problem was in fact an opportunity for me to learn a new thing. I don't know why, but i just connected the 3.5mm pin of lavalier directly into my 5d and... viola!! ....the lavalier was working as usual!!

Now my question is, will there be any problem by directly connecting the lavalier without the power unit, to my 5d. I guess the lavalier will use the power from the 5d battery, which i think won't drain it out.

A possible issue could be that you'll be relying on the appalling pre-amps that is in the 5D3… this could create a more noisy recording than if you had used a more demanding setup with fx a microport kit.

I haven't tried what you did myself, so ofcourse I can't do a direct comparison, but I can imagine it being an issue.

I used to always plug in my Sennheiser g3 lav kit straight into the 5D MK III. Set levels and ready to go. A lot of people might say you're not getting quality sound, but for basic sit down interviews, it was always good enough for me. Worst case scenario, I would have to do a quick clean up of the sound in post. But at least didn't have to sync sound later.

But thats not the case of the OP... He's not even using a kit.. just the lavalier. That's how I read it anyways.... I have no issues with the G3 straight into the cam either, works like a charm.

well, my lavalier doesn't have any buttons or settings to control the input volume. The electrical kit with a single AA battery is, i guess, only to turn on the mic as there is no on/off button. i just have to connect the lavalier to the electrical unit, which than goes into converter and than finally into my 5d mark iii.

The last i recorded was, without this electrical unit, i just plug the end of the lavalier into my 5d and i got good result...there was no hissing sound or anything. in fact there is no difference when used directly into 5d or used with the electrical unit.

Many lavs and small microphones use a low voltage "plug-in power". This is what is provided by your adapter as well as most new DSLRs.
I doubt you'd notice a difference in battery life with your adapter left at home.
