Lavalier connected directly to 5d Mark III vs connected to tascam dr-40?

"Spec.s" are also misleading. 100- 15,000 would be a noticeable low cut on most male voices. But that 100-15,000 is probably nowhere close to flat and especially on a cheap mic what are they basing the numbers on?

On a pricier mic the top and bottom are generally measured from the points drop -3dB from the reference. And the response is usually fairly flat between the numbers. On a cheap mic they might use some other reference for the top and bottom (there is no legal standard so...) and the mic may well have significant peaks and valleys in it's response. It's fairly common to see a boost in the upper mid range. In that case your reference is really that boosted level and as a consequence the lows will be effectively lowered.

Also you said you are putting the mic at the top button. That is not an ideal location and is probably pulling out some bass.

Yes, That's not an ideal location. Normally a lav is placed around the third bottom (sternum area). Of course in film productions some wardrobes prohibit this, so alternate placement is necessary.

I concur with Rick. Make a fist and palce it flat on the subject's chest with the knuckle of your thumb touching his Adam's Apple. Where the pinky finger crosses the button flap is a good spot for a first try. It'll be close to on the nipple line in the middle of the chest.

i am using a lavalier with frequency response of 100-15,000Hz. is it good enough?

...and I'd like to sell you some LEDs with a CRI of 99...

Seriously, how does it sound? Specs are pretty meaningless - some of the greatest audio gear in history has pretty so-so specs in some areas.

Get an OST (usually these threads erupt with about 20 "me too's" when someone mentions OST as a great budget lav). Get a friend and experiment with placement.

so that means i should rather connect my lav to the digital recorder like tascam dr-40 to get a good quality audio from my lav.

Maybe. If the mic is not capable of good audio, even connecting it to a $20,000 Cantar won't make it good. All you'd get is a really great recording of an ugly sounding signal. All other things being equal, the Tascam will most likely record better audio than you'd get recording in the DSLR but if the mic isn't any good, nothing you connect it to will make it any better. Silk purse from a sow's ear and all that. With a $10 mic you're pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel.
