Lav placement

Hi guys,

Just our of curiosity really.. ive started to notice that particularly on news and other discussion programmes, the presenters/speakers are often wearing two lav's on one clip... is this simply as a back up if one of them goes down..or does it produce a better quality sound...?

Also in terms of placement, i sometimes see speakers wearing their lav's facing down, some facing up and also some with the lav pointed to the side...
Is the position and direction of the mic determined by the kind of voice that the speaker has...? (loud or soft speaking)

Cheers in advance for any input! Stuff like this is always good to know!

The dual mics are to provide a backup if one goes down. Turning the mic so it faces downwards can help prevent nose exhalations from hitting the mic if the wearer is a heavy breather.
