Lav Mic Advice

Hey guys, the time has come for me to purchase a lav mic as I'm starting to take on projects that require their use.

I've read all the helpful sticky topics regarding these mics , but I'd like to find out more what you guys think about what you've used and get some recommendations.

My price range is £100-£250 and would like to hear your thoughts on what might be best for me at this time.

I'm very new to these types of microphones, so I'm taking baby steps right now and need a bit of help.

Thank you

I use a DVX-100B if that makes any difference

By "lav," do you actually mean a hard-wired lavaliere mic? "Lav" is often, and incorrectly, used in reference to a wireless system (radio mic) with a lav. Just making sure.

If you're talking about hard-wired, you have a pretty good budget for any of the favorites: DPA, Sanken COS-11, Countryman B3 or B6. Also, take a look at the new RODE pin mic.

Ah thanks for the heads up on that mate. Yeah I'm looking for something wireless, as my actors need to be walking quite a way away from the camera in several scenes. If my budget is perhaps too low for something like that I'm sure I can throw in another £100-150 towards it. If this is still too low I guess I'm screwed haha.
Cheers for the help

Read up. The stickies that you've read have lots of info, but a quick search of the forums for "wireless" will turn up dozens of threads... and most of them refer to the same units. Be advised, the least you can spend on a wireless unit and still expect any quality is $500 - 600 USD (£316 - 380).

Try these, easily located using the search function:

Maybe you should consider renting a good wireless unit until you can afford a proper one. Might make the most sense.
