latitude and highlights

Ok, so I've been watching videos by dvxusers and most have pretty decent highlight control. What do I need to do to capture the sky with clouds and the objects in the foreground. Are there scene file settings that could help or is this just a limitation of the camera. Even on an overcast day my dvx100b cannot expose for the whole image. I always blown highlights or have to really underexpose. Do I need filters or a matte box.:violin::embarasse:Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

Mattebox and some nd grads with a soft edge will go along ways. You can add a polarizer with the nd grad and see some nice detail in you clouds.

cinelikeD, and a polarizer. Or you can dual up polarizers and rotate them until you get the sky where you want it and then expose for the for ground. That will give you a very vivid cloud look.

Big bounce card/foam board/12x12etc or lights HMI's etc on foreground will help reduce the light ratio. Used in conjuction with Graduated ND's should do the trick.

limitations are of video in general. Video doesn't have the latitude of film and neither have the latitude of the human eye/brain. Treat the video like reversal film, expose for the highlights cause once blown you can't get them back. Then bring up your base light level with lights or bounce to reduce light ratio.
