Latex appliance

Hello, im working on a scene were the actor gets his throat slit, Now i have been messing with an idea. I figure if i make a cast of the person neck, and then cast it, i should have a decent appliance. Now the real question is how to i create the slit throat. Ive heard tom savini talk about using fish string to open up the wound, allowing it to pull apart. Anyone have any other suggestion, or does it sound like im walking in the right direction
