Latest Spoon Video - "Sister Jack"

Thanks.
I've done some, but not a lot.

Edited some of 'Small Stakes' for Spoon, along with doing some camerawork and the editing on the 'Making of LP5' promo video that is on their website.

Other than that I did some production/postproduction work on "Kodiak" for a band called 'Zykos' here in Austin. I think that video is still up on their website.

Most of my work is corporate video & TV commercials, so it's fun to be able to work on a music video every now and again. Helps break up the monotony.

Cool video!

Perhaps you can add a thread in the FCP seccion explaining the post-production process of down converting from film into FCP5... I will love to learn about it.

Thanks

Luis,

nice work, my friend. Eric Harvey of 'Spoon' is a friend of mine as well as Michael Booher of 'Zykos'. So, I am assuming that these works were filmed by Peter and/or Julie Simonite?
Good to see some Spoon stuff on this forum. That band rocks my face off!
keep up the good work,

Hey Adam,

Thanks. Yeah, your assumption is right... Pete & Julie directed both the Spoon video and the Zykos video (Kodiak). Small world, and it just gets smaller everyday.

I checked out your site and saw you did some photography for Zykos.
Really nice shots by the way. And the short reel looked great (I'm a big fan of that Air song too, so that didn't hurt).

Roman,
It really has very little to do with Final Cut Pro itself.
The process is really pretty simple.

The film was telecined to DigiBeta at a lab.

We had DVCam dubs made of the DigiBeta masters (because I don't have a capture card in my Mac).

I then captured the DVCam footage and edited the video in FCP exactly as you would edit if you had shot in DV to begin with.

Once we were finished and the edit was locked I exported an EDL (Edit Decision List) from FCP. I then sent the EDL to the lab along with a DVCam master of the video for reference. The lab then edits the DigiBeta footage to conform with the cuts we made in DV.

We just had to make sure we made note of any effects that we added in post (basically anything other than a straight cut). Since 99% of the video is straight cuts this wasn't that big a deal. We had one shot we 'flopped' so we just made note of it and the lab made sure to recreate that effect on their timeline.

So, all in all things went pretty mucht the same as they would if we had shot on DV.
For my part of the project I just captured DV, edited, and output DV. Then I had to make sure the lab had everything they needed, but that's just a matter of keeping in contact with them and being very clear on what they require and in what format.

But I would add that if I had it to do over again I would just go out and get a BlackMagic or AJA card and rent a DigiBeta deck. The amount of time/money spent with a lab just isn't worth it for offline/online SD work, not when you consider how cheap some of the cards and hard drives are now.

Luis,

thanks a lot for the feedback. The Spoon video looks great too. I'm sure our paths may cross some day...until then, keep up the good work.

Adam
