Latest release from Sony

I'd like to share the comments of a friend who e-mailed me today to share his thoughts on the whole HDV scenario. In the first sentence, he is referring to the JVC HD100 in response to a phone conversation. If anyone cares to share their thoughts, I'd like to hear (read) them.

"Hey; this mentions a component output, but it only barely mentions the fact that it looks neat on mini dv too, when talking about the real HD.

This is going to be slightly less demanding than the 1080i sony, but still, at HD res, there is far too much info gone via MPEG 2 and firewire compression to make the product of this editable from mini dv tape. I can't find a single piece of solid info about the component and required connection to get HD from the HDV. same type of hype Sony is making, not fully informing someone that you need a very expensive HD drive array, likely 10 drive minimum, HDI capture card, a lot more RAM than some computers can hold and use. So figure anyone that gets this and wants HD will need to add about $6-10K to their budget for the things that make their computer capable of HD.

their press release has dead links to the HDMI explanation, there is something about it in the brochure that I am now trying to print large enough to read. This is clearly the same as the Sony, they are being dead quiet about the fact that you don't get any HD unless you edit as HDI. They hint, but nowhere do they actually tell the truth. Note that the HDV logo is owned jointly by JVC Victor and Sony? that Panasonic has a different format tells all. Sure hope Canon goes with the Pana format, and not the nonsense"

HDV cameras have firewire just a MiniDV camera does and so you don't need ten HDD's to edit it.
You can even use Apple's iMovie to edit HDV from the Sony camera.

The format is still crap in comparison to Panasonic HD, as your friend illuded in his note.

HDV's bitrate is about the same as that of DV, so I think your friend is a little misinformed. He is right that the compression on the tape (there's no such thing as "firewire compression") is somewhat degrading, but that's precisely the reason why you won't need 10 big disks to work with it.
