Speaking of news when will get something on the DVX100b? Maybe something new on the HVX200? What happened to Jan? Can't they throw out a new picture with a plastic sheet over it or something?

 just to add to my wish list .How about a usb 444 out to a hard drive?

To be serious, what I want to see next from Panasonic is a 3-chip SD 24P "palmcorder" that records on P2. It should have a Zeiss lens like the small Sony cameras, and have image quality that closely matches the DVX so the two could be intercut. It should retail for less than $800 without P2-card (feasible, considering that it doesn't have a tape transport and cheap DV cameras are going for >$400).

This would make a great second camera for those situations where the DVX is too big, bulky, or obtrusive. It won't have all the features of the DVX, but have enough basics to get the shot.

Give it time. They'll release something when they're good and ready.

To be fair, Jan indicated that she would give details of new DVX100-"B" the day after opening day of NAB, which was last April. This did not happen. We were told prior to NAB that it would not have lead and maybe be a different color. But Jan stated more info would be coming at NAB. Then people starting asking on this forum "what happeped" when there was no info at all.

Several times Barry has said that Jan hasn't posted any news because there is no news and that she is just as much in the dark as we are about the camera. I don't think it is unreasonable for people to ask about the camera since 3 months have gone by with no info.

It still would be nice if Jan gave an update even if it was just telling us that she still hasn't learned anything and that she realizes people are still interested in this camera and that DVX users still matter to Panasonic.

I don't think this is too much to ask considering how loyal the users of this site have been to Panasonic and how many units they have sold because of our advocacy for the DVX100.

To be fair, Jan's been extraordinarily busy, developing marketing campaigns for multiple new products and doing the DV Expo show. She was at the show and talking to people; I'm sure that any news she had would have been given at the show. I've sent her e-mails telling her we miss her participation and want to see her back on the board, and she assured me she'll be back here as soon as she gets these current responsibilities properly handled.

Well, Jan is back as of today on this board. She just posted a new thread about "November" opening in theaters this week.

It would be great if she could take an extra minute to give a one sentence update on the DVX 100-B, even if she had no information, but just to let us know that she is aware of our interest.

Hi,

The only news I have on the 100B is that it is slated for September/October Delivery. And it will be a different color. I know that isn't much, but if you want to see what the diamond graphite parts have turned to see the BMW site and look at their color called Black Sapphire.

Best,

Jan

Breaking News!!!!!!!!!!!
The color is different.
Who cares.
Now go shoot something and let Jan do her job.

I don't think anybody cares about the color being diffferent. If you are not interested in the possible changes to the DVX 100 then don't read this thread.

This site is about the sharing of information. Why is it OK for there to be 10,347 posts and questions about the unreleased HVX 200 which won't be out until maybe next year and it is NOT OK to ask about a camera that is supposed to be released in a couple of months?

I have a real interest in the DVX 100 B. I'm going to be shooting a Doc and my first choice is to shoot it with a camera that has a 16X9 chip. I have ruled out anamorphic and squeeze from all that I've learned from other helpful posts.

My second choice with the current DVX is to shoot 4X3 and crop for 16X9. The Canon has a 16X9 chip, however, after spending hours and hours of time on this fabulous site learning from others who let people ask questions without getting hostile, I came to the conclusion that I would prefer to use a DVX over the Canon.

Since I will be starting to shoot around the time the DVX 100B is supposed to come out it would be very helpful for me to know if the 100B will include a 16X9 chip. Not an unreasonable question since the "competition" has this feature and since the HVX200 will have a standard def dv 16X9 chip. This chip might be transportable to the 100B.

If there is information that Jan has that could answer this question then this would be helpful to me in making an informed decision about my purchase. If Jan can tell me that she knows that there will be no 16X9 chip and no other advantages then I can decide sooner and make my plans about what camera and supporting gear I will need.

Are you over in the HVX threads responding to the over 10,000 post telling people to stop asking Jan questions about the HVX 200?

As I pointed out in my previous post, last April Jan was kind enough to tell us that she would make more announcements about the the 100B at NAB. This did not happen, so after not hearing any info for three months some of us asked again.

You find this unreasonable. I don't. Jan did respond in this thread that she had no more information. She responded because we asked. While it is disappointing that she couldn't tell us more, it was good to hear that she is aware of the interest and that some people are still interesed in the product to come just like others are interested in the HVX.

As far as your suggestion that this thread is stopping Jan from doing her job, well, I don't even think Jan takes that statement seriously.

And thanks Jan for taking a moment to give those of us who ARE interested an update.

Kelly, I don't think you'll get any further answers until the camera comes out. The reason I say that is, Panasonic sprung the DVX100A on us, fully formed and ready to go, without a *hint* of any news that a replacement was coming. Not one breath or mention that there was even a new camera on the way -- just one day there was an announcement that said "effective immediately, the DVX100 is discontinued, and replaced by the DVX100A".

I think the only reason Jan mentioned the DVX100B at all was because it had something to do with a lead-based environmental initiative. Other than that, pre-announcing details about a replacement for an existing, on-the-shelf model is something that's just not "done". No company does that. They'll announce new cameras for which there is no existing model (such as the HVX), but incremental updates never get announced. Canon sprung the GL2 and XL2 with no advance warning, no hint of what changes would be coming. Sony did the same thing with the PD170/VX2100. They announced the FX1 six months before it was delivered, yes -- but the PD170 just showed up overnight. JVC did the same thing -- the HD100 has been announced 8 months prior to it actually showing up, but the DV5100 replaced the DV5000 overnight.

I expect Panasonic to do the same. Talking about features of a forthcoming replacement is something that's just never "done". So I understand completely why you want more info, and I understand completely your frustration at not getting more info -- but what I'm telling you is -- no company does that, so don't be surprised if Panasonic doesn't offer more info than they've already given.

Well Barry you just shot to heck my long winded theory about this which is running over in the DVX 100 B thread. I was on a roll. Too many nights in City Hall arguing about laws and policy.

You make a compelling case and have more experience with Panasonic and are obviously closer to their operating procedure. I do completely understand about not wanting to make announcements about a replacement for a product that is in the marketplace for obvious sales reasons, but I still think somebody knows the exact details of any camera that is about to be in the stores in 5 to 8 weeks. They just ain't talkin.

Oh, I agree that somebody knows the exact details. Certainly the engineers know, as they're the ones putting the details in. And I'd expect Jan to know. Notice, she didn't say "I know nothing", she said "the only news I have"... that could be taken two ways: "the only news I have BEEN GIVEN BY THE FACTORY", or you could read it as "the only news I have THAT I AM ALLOWED TO SHARE WITH YOU PUBLICLY"... see, it could be read both ways. ;)

I am confident the 100B launch is in good hands and will be handled appropriately.

Well, whatever the next incarnation of the camera turns out to be I am going to have it and love it and use the heck out of it.
