Re: Latest from DVExpo?

Overall the show was a big dud. (okay, let me rephrase that: a LITTLE dud). The booths that were there were good, but there were very few of them. It was a much, much, much smaller show than I was anticipating.

The DVX100A is out, and the good news is the price is only $200 higher. Which, in my opinion, is probably about right. I used it, I fiddled around with it about as much as you can in one of those busy trade-show settings, and I think I'm in agreement with Adam Wilt -- it'd be nice to have, but I'm thinking my DVX100 is plenty right now. Note: that is NOT how I expected to feel, I really expected to find the DVX100A irresistible, but instead it's nicer but not overwhelming.

The AG-DVC30 was there, it's a very little camera, looked pretty good, but hey, it's not a DVX, so what's the point?

They also had an SDX900 and VariCam there, that was surprising, you normally don't see those outside of a show like NAB.

Century was showing their new viewfinder de-anamorphosizer for the DVX. It's an extension you add onto the eyepiece, that un-squeezes the anamorphic image. Seemed like a more elegant and useful solution than the LCD magnifier-de-anamorphosizer they sell for the PD150/GL2. They will not offer the LCD-panel option for the DVX, just the viewfinder thing. And it's really pricey: $395. For that money I think I'd buy a good used 1354Q and flip the 16:9 switch on it...

I dunno, all in all it seemed pretty much a tiny little show. I bailed at 3:00 because there didn't appear to be anything else to see.

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

Wow, sorry to hear it wasn't all it was cracked up to be... However, since i'm in the market for a new cam, it's good to hear the A is out. So maybe the economy shrunk the exhibitors this year?

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

I'm shooting for Court TV. Does anyone know where I can buy now a 100A. I have the 100 but need another one by Dec 26, NTSC. Shooting then for two months.

Thanks for the info: please email me direct: lschiller@klscomm.com

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

hey barry.. I am surprised I didnt bump into you.. I was there for the whole day almost... did you attend Adam's little class?

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

I didn't know about Adam's class -- darn. Would have liked to check it out.

I was hovering around there for about five hours, which was about all the time it took to see everything, make the rounds around the show floor three times, sit through the Serious Magic UltraKey demo, ignore the JVC booth, ignore the Pinnacle booth, ignore the Avid booth, ignore the Adobe booth, be amazed at how E M P T Y the Canon booth was, check out Spot's audio editing lecture on Vegas, back down to the show floor for -- what, I don't know, but by gum I paid $10 to park and I drove four hours for this so I better find something interesting... hmmm, that purple tripod head is kinda cool...

I spent the first hour waiting for a shot at the DVX100/A, and watching poor Steve Golub fielding the same newbie questions over and over and over and over... doesn't anyone read these boards? ;)

The only "regulars" I saw were Douglas Spotted Eagle, and Noah Kadner, and Steve Golub, and Mizell Wilson... didn't find you, didn't catch Chris Hurd although I "hurd" he was there. Saw the Lindenblooms of Creative Cow. Didn't even see Charles of ProMax, although JD was there (that is a FUNNY guy!) Hope Charles is okay, I heard he had some health issues...

Dud of a show though. Hoping C.E.S. and N.A.B. are more worthwhile!

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

Barry, Do you know of any issues with the gain in 24p...That was one of the upgrade wasn't it? That really interests me, since I'll be purchasing 2 the beginning of Jan for a series I'm shooting here in Miami, and I'll be doing nights in clubs. Thanks.

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

lol.. yeah.. I was the really tall guy, a few DVXusers came up to me and it was pretty cool to meet you guys.

Poor Steve... good thing he seems like a social guy because I swear as soon as people went through the door they headed straight for the new camera.. it was insane. It was kinda funny though because they had the lineup of cameras there, and because everyone was all around the new dvx setup that the HD varicam just sat there.. so it was very nice to be able to just walk up and have some alone time with it.

Anyways, good thing for Adams class.. He actually showed the trailer for Art History and I went up at the end and took some questions, he's such a damn good guy. If it wasnt for him I woulda been a little pissed... you drove 4 hours... I flew from Canada and had to stay in the Ghetto Holiday Inn (3 stars my ass) by the convention center.

You really coulda went through that show in 2 hours and seen everything, the only thing other than Panasonic that was cool was seeing that the Quickstream DV  direct to disk drive is finally out, and talking to the Cavision guys about thier new products was cool.

That $10 parking was nuts.. I had to leave to pick up my Camera Assistant from the hotel and when I came back (10 minutes later) they tried to ding me again.. lol...

I dont know what I was expecting, this was my first DV expo west and I guess NAB ruined it for me because NAB you need a good 3 days to go through, and its almost 5 times the size.

I thought it was funny as well that Canon booth was pretty dead.. I mean sure they havnt had a new product forever, but it was a little sad. They put the P+S technic booth right beside the Canon booth and I thinked it helped Canon because all the people lining up to see the mini 35 adapter made it look like there was more people at Canon's booth.

Sony did have a pretty good intrest.. the two new cameras they have I guess made the Sony camp happy for now.

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

You flew in from Canada just for this show... man, you gotta be frosted over that!

I didn't see the quickstream DV, I saw the CitiDisk DV was there but it didn't seem like they were prepared for any questions.

As for the gain in 24P modes, I didn't even look at that, I guess I was just expecting it to be fine. AF in 24P is a different story, I think anyone who's expecting "autofocus" is going to be disappointed. Panasonic rightly calls it "focus assist" because it's nowhere near quick enough to be used as a legitimate autofocus system. Let me yell this, so hopefully it'll save some people from disaster:

I WOULD NEVER, NEVER, NEVER SHOOT WITH 24P IN FOCUS ASSIST MODE! Don't do it, you're asking for trouble, Panasonic did the right thing by disabling it because it saved them a whole raft of customer complaints.

The right way to use "focus assist" would be to keep the camera in MF mode, frame up your shot, zoom all the way in, push the "push to autofocus" button and hold it until focus locks. That's what it should be used as. If you put the switch in "auto" mode, you are begging for blurry out-of-focus shots.

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

the gain up is pretty silly too.. 24p mode isnt going to save noisy chroma troubled footage shot in no light, and trying to gain up to see anything..
if not for the other valuable features.. one could reasonably think the A stood for "amature" .. the auto focus, and gain up are sort of mass market pleasers, but really they took them out to begin with cause they didnt want people making nasty footage with the cam.. and saying "look at my film like imagery from panasonics new dvx100!!"
theres a reason that pros use the manual controls. oh well .. hopefully people will reseve the use of the features unless they have some obscure reason to actually use them. like power zooming..

Re: Latest from DVExpo?

I went to the fcp meeting at the expo, sorry I didn't know you guys were there or I would have looked for you. The 35 mm adapter was probably my favorite thing at the show. The fcp meeting had the editors from Scrubs and they were a hoot. Had a great time. I'm a tiny little red head gal if anyone remembers talking to me.
