FS7: Late April Odyssey Status Check

So, I know we have plenty of old threads discussing the Odyssey issues in regards to the FS7. I'm contemplating buying one. I'd like to get an idea of which issues still persist.

I've read in the past about problems on the O7Q (and O7Q+) with:
- Magenta Cast
- RAW Banding
- ProRes has wrong gamma curve for some SLog Modes
- More issues?

Are any of these resolved? Do we have any timelines on fixes? Etc.

What modes are currently safe for recording with the FS7 and the Odyssey?

As of today:

Magenta raw fixed.
Banding in raw not fixed, possibly more a Sony side issue.

Pro Res recording via raw output has incorrect contrast/gamma. Nick Shaw's workflow doc is a good workaround but not a fix per se.

I would add that there may very be progress in our upcoming firmware release. It is in testing and due shortly.

The RAW banding appears only in the 2k RAW. The 4k RAW is clean.

The ProRes contrast issue has improved dramatically from where it started. You still wouldn't want to use a LUT built for slog3, but it isn't loosing data anymore. If you captured using ProRes, you'd have no problem grading it by hand. Hopefully it will continue to get better in the upcoming firmware releases.

There were two magenta issues (one on the FS7 in custom mode and one on the Odyssey 7Q in RAW). Both of these have been fixed.

The Pro Res contrast issue is less about whether you can work around it and grade it and more about judging exposure with a weird gamma curve applied to footage. I will be overjoyed once the 7Q can record in slog3 without adding or taking away anything.

The gamma curve applies to the recorded footage, not just to what you see on the monitor. The footage has more contrast, yes, but you can use the waveform, zebras, false color (or whatever your preferred measure is) to set exposure just as easily as you could on correct log footage.

There would be an issue (and there was prior to the last firmware) if it was clipping the highlights or shadows.

When I last tried it made it significantly harder to judge exposure and contrast ratios with such an odd curve attached. Luckily Nick Shaw's great work brought that material back to something like slog3 in post. Mitch's post sounds very promising in terms of slog from raw.

You'll be happy to know that Nick continues to work closely with us on this.

Fantastic. He's saved the only two paid shoots I have done with the 7Q back on the original firmware. Looking forward to what you can all come up with.
