Last batch of HVX tests, Test - 01

nice.. got to love those norweigen ladies. was this 1080? and how did you deal with the greenscreen and your workflow?

Thanx!

I shoot all in 1080, but as I've been keying a lot last half year, I'd say that keying the HVX is kind of work-heavy for most shots.

(Try taking a DSL image and an HVX image of the same set, take it into Shake and hit keylight, and you'll see what I mean...)

But In a week or two, I'll be shooting Red (for keys at least) and I'll save a lot of time (and use a lot of more diskspace...)

Workflow:
Shoot :)
Assemble scenografies (these consist of 6 layers (2 stills, 2 videos for the water waves from Maya and smoke from motion) + a lot of rotomasks for lighting and focus.

Key.

Tracking

Cut

Color

Sorta.

Planned in an hour
Shot in 5 minutes.
Post: 2 weeks.... (+ 3D work from my partner...)

But it's fun...

The shake scripts are seriously long, and far too much of this time is spent on the keys (and I'm still not happy...)

But I've learned a lot, and tested a lot, and I dare say that you need full-raster 4:4:4 to pull nice keyes. The HVX is a wonderfull cam (I really think so) but the lack of "real" chroma rez is a real bummer for keying, when you're not real close.

And it ads lots of weird stuff on all edges (I guess because of the pixel-shifting)

Don't take this as HVX bashing, cause it's not. I've made a good living for almost two years from the cam and it has served me well (and definitely will in the future), but this is an issue taking too many hours.

Anyway. It's been a fun ride!

I'll post the last couple of tests the next couple of days.

And please: Just bash my work! It's not yet public :)

Cheers!

I'm Jealous.. You are getting a Red.. Can't wait to see what you do with that. Did you see that product that reduces the noise and blocking and that.. SHould be a great asset to keying.

A lot of what you wrote is over my head. Havne't used shake but would like too. I'm more of a cuts-only editor with a bit of compositing stuff thrown in.

cheers and good luck with this and that. Don't bail and forget us HVX users when you go to the Red as so many have already. I personally am interested in the Scarlett... WHat will that little bugger bring?

I haven't planned to retire my HVX or disappear from this forum, but i AM looking forward to get the RED... :)

There's still plenty of situations where the HVX will be the righter choice.

Can't really post RED stuff here, though...

But thanks.
