Larry Clark's KIDS

Mike Krumlauf

Award Winning Filmmaker
I just saw this movie, and I must say its pretty disturbing and i did not like it all too much. Does anyone agree with me on this or am i crazy?

I didn't like it at all.

The kids were really annoying.

Reminded me of some of the pipsqueaks i used to beat up in elementary school.

His work is pretty raw. I enjoyed it my first time seeing it many years ago. His next movie, I forget the title but it had James Woods in it, I enjoyed much more. He has an unreleased movie, Ken Park, which I'm told is ten times more disturbing than Kids.

I first saw Kids back when it first came out and I was the same age as the actors. At that time I thought it was a good flick, really captured what being a kid in NYC was like back then (maybe a little over the top, but very close) Nowadays I watch it and It doesn't really hit home anymore. That being said, I'm no longer a punk-ass 16 year old.

On another note, I one of the kids from the film that I met a few times recently Died of an overdose I believe.

Also, the flick launched the careers of chloe sevigny and rosaria dawson

ya i saw it and didn't like it. I guess the fact it was "kids" acting that way was supposed to be the point. Because their behavior in general isn't all that far out, its just their behavior at such a young age. To have shown adults or atleast college age kids acting like that wouldn't have been so shocking. So to me it was showing that that behavior is childish. But ya ne ways i didn't like it much. Thats the most i could pull out of it.

I remember it being exactly like how kids coming of age act. (NYC, LA or rural Arkansas). Smoking, drinking, sex ....

I also remember the kids being annoying as we probably were at that age.

I'll bet you were hell-on-wheels in elementary school...

I liked the movie. Didn't really like the two friends. Leo Fitzpatrick (Telly) had a minor but prominent part in one of Larry Clark's later films, "Bully," and the funniest line in the movie. Possibly the only funny line in the movie.

I remember enjoying it back when it hit video. It's no more disturbing than the things I hear about kids these days, actually it seems a lot tamer now. Where were these damn rainbow parties (no it's not gay, far from it) when I was in high school?

The Doom Generation had a similar kind of feel, albeit with older kids.

I think it was, as stated, too over-the-top.

The "It's me, Casper" scene was just too forced for shock value. But it was a good film in the way it applied many of the Dogma techniques and storyteling routines. Probably more effective than "Traffic" and its "Prosecutors Daughter is an addict" storyline...

Larry Clark's work tends to polarize audiences. I graduated highschool in 1995 and I think Kids was so real it disturbed a lot of people -- I've always enjoyed that film.

I've seen Ken Park too, and that one was too much for me. Still, I like to see some films that challenge my sensibilities (Todd Solondz comes to mind too).

Larry Clark has a new one out called Wassup Rockers that has gotten some good reviews:

oh yeeeeaahh!!! I never even realized that! Then again, I haven't seen or thought about this movie in forever, but did not even realize that IS chloe!!

i always felt so bad for jenny. not long after i saw this movie, i went thru some crazy stuff of my own and chopped all of my hair off. just like jenny's.

I really didnt see much cinematic worth in this film! Compared to 'Bully' or 'another day in paradise' I thought it was pretty unstructured slice of reality. There's only so much voyeurism you can take with kids talking crap before you feel like turning off.

that said I like the scene where you can see the lapel mic's under the kids t-shirts. that bit was good.
