Large Hadron Collider

guys, i think i have a solution to fund the lhc AND research to solve energy, medical, and food problems. i call it the dane cook/ben affleck approach. imagine if everyone that pays money to watch their "comedies" suddenly stopped. think of all the billions of dollars we could save and put towards research. not only that, but we also save millions of man hours that could be used doing something productive. over time, cook and affleck would slowly fade into oblivion. and the world becomes a better place...

The building of the LHC employed many, many people over the years it was built and will employ many more in the years to come.

So without the LHC those people employed would just be sitting around doing nothing? lol We all know that people find a way to survive. If it wasn't the LHC it would have been another job. People just don't roll over and die. Besides, building schools would employee thousands of teachers and would create a lot of jobs because, after the students graduate, they can receive micro-loans to start new businesses. Something that has been proven to work in other countries.

Keep in mind, Einstein didn't have a collider. He had a brilliant mind and a black board. Nothing can substitute a well educated mind and no collider can put a book in a kids hand. I'm not saying the collider won't cure cancer. It could very well do that. Just like you can't say $10 billion dollars worth of scholarships wouldn't result in a student in India possibly curing cancer. Correct?

Most likely the cure for cancer will be found in a jungle some where any way. The answer to problems are usually right in front of us. We're just too busy being distracted by big shiny things.

I try to avoid topics like this because this is a very sensitive subject for me. I left a high paying job (where I saw millions squandered on rich executives) to dedicated my life helping the poor. And I have seen, first hand, how much $1 can change the world. Don't get me wrong, I love science and I'm a huge NASA freak, but if I had to decide between building a collider or providing 1 million scholarships. Sorry but the students get it. We'll build the collider with next years budget. lol

Other than education, space exploration is a great use of tax payers money. Putting a man on Mars would have an amazing effect on society. It would unite the world (for a moment) and be the catalyst for inspiration and innovation, similar to the technological boom we saw after the Moon landing.

I will consider anything others have to say and I won't deny that anything is possible, but I will always feel that education is the solution to everything and it should always come first. And I am sure the scientists at the LHC have education to thank for where they are right now.

Sad Max, thanks for taking the time to reply (again) after the DVXuser outage. Obviously my ideas differ from others. Which is fine. I am the rebel. ;-) Only time will tell who is right but, unfortunately, if nobody gives me $10 billion then we'll never know if I was right. lol Either way society will benefit and that's all that matters.

over time, cook and affleck would slowly fade into oblivion. and the world becomes a better place...

Throw in the guys who made "Meet The Spartans" and I'm in!!

Gotta go. It's 4:10am here and we've got another experiment in the morning. (50 helmets + 50 students = ???) It doesn't take a scientist to figure out the answer is "smiles".

And without EDUCATION there would have been NO theories and NO big shiny things to test the theories.

Trust me, no matter what card you play education is going to beat it.

Without education there is NOTHING. It is the best investment any one can make.

And there is widespread education - even if not as widespread as we'd all like - and still enough money to build the collider, with more left over.

Trust me, no matter what card you play education is going to beat it.

I don't notice that you've addressed *any* of the issues that need to be dealt with, in order to create an environment in which effective education can take place.

You don't have to convince me of that, I just don't think it's a zero sum game. You can have both. I'm sure with the budget of your average Hollywood blockbuster you could feed a small country for a few years. That doesn't mean they shouldn't exist.

Have you seen "Meet The Spartans"? :)

What do you want, Sad Max? I told you I'm not putting together a PowerPoint. lol Do you want detailed plans of covert operations on how we'd take out the main guerrilla leader and free the people from oppression? Providing education means building schools and providing teachers and, of course, it would mean there's already an effective environment for education. Which, fortunately, most countries already have. So we'd start there. Also, I don't need to address any issues to YOU. If you had $10 billion dollars to give then I would, but all you can give me right now is heartburn so, if you don't mind, I'll save my blueprints and pie charts for when it really matters.

If you're still referencing Somalia then I present to you this amazing story of an Olympic athlete from Somalia. There is hope. And the right money in the right places could make big changes there and create an environment for effective education. Nothing comes from nothing. And I'm so happy that pessimists don't make the decisions for education and scientific funding.

Out of "millions," you ought to be able to produce at least two or three instances, to support your point...

Now you're just insulting my intelligence. You know damn well that I could NEVER prove that there was no scientific benefit to an experiment. Just like you could NEVER prove that there was no benefit from a charitable expenditure. Come on, Sad Max. Admit it. That line was baited.

This argument is running in circles, much like the collider. And my brain power is at 5% right now. Let's just agree that you're wrong and I'm right? Ok? Good.

:)

Seriously, I've wasted enough energy on this topic to power the collider for a month. Now I'm going to do some experiments that might just advance our entire species. Which is better than waiting for others to do it.

Edit: Going to focus my positive charged particles outside. Have fun!

can't we all just get along? lol. education and research are both necessary. :)
the scientists that do research with particle accelerators can work on that and the ones that do research to cure diseases can work on that. and we should increase the amount of science we teach in schools to expand the potential pool of future scientists.

I can see this snow balling, but its not that one is more important than another, just the ORDER in which they should be done.

Just like going to work is important, BUT so is putting your cloths on, one would put cloths on First before going to work; just because something is executed before another thing it does not diminish its importance.

( X ∧ Y ) ≡ X ≡ Y

But With Respect to time T:

X > Y

I've been following this thread; very interesting and valid points on both sides.

However, I must defer to Sad Max on this one. I agree, world hunger and other humantarian issues are important and that everyone must get their priorities in order...

But Sad Max has nailed my view of the deal on the head.

For what it is worth:

Per Wiki

It is funded by and built in collaboration with over eight thousand physicists from over eighty-five countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories

Ah, John and his big text. Well I'll see your big text and raise you a yellow. :)

Instead of debating about what benefits mankind the most, why don't we each help advance our species and encourage others to do the same. Which is MUCH better than waiting for others to do it for us.

Sure it's easier to depend on others to change the world, but it's much more fun to do it yourself. So whether it's through film or through charity, do something that helps and inspires others. I think we can all agree on that.

Thanks, John. Yellow text never lies.

Jeeze, didn't I already post proof that these gizmos can do BOTH?

Yes, you did. We just like going around in circles and colliding. :)

Unfortunately, there's very little benefit to this kind of colliding so hopefully we can stop soon.

I'm starting to have flashbacks of karaoke. Gotta get some sleep. See ya!

Maybe we are trapped after all, I mean I tried loggin into DVX earlier but it didn't work, that was the glitch or should I say time when the switch was made..
