FS7: large backpack?

Hi all,

I've been looking for a good bag for my FS7 and this thread has been incredibly useful:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?331233-Bag-suggestion

I thought I might finally have to stop using a backpack with a camera this size, but I'd really like to continue with one if possible. Seems crazy to not use my back if I also might be carrying a whole load of other stuff.

So I saw this from PortaBrace:
http://www.portabrace.com/products/camcorder-cases/camera-rigs/1272-rig-fs7bkx

It seems ideal to me, but it's not available in the UK yet and I'm sure when it is it won't be cheap. And I haven't seen any shots of the camera inside it and whether it could carry other stuff (V-lock batteries, lenses) safely.

Does anyone know of any other large backpacks that could deal with the camera with room to spare? I don't mind removing the side grip but ideally would leave the top handle and swivel the viewfinder.

Cheers!

I have a few cases/bags for my FS7. First a B&W Outdoor Case 55. This is the case I store my FS7 in and the one I use when going by car to jobs. The FS7 can stand up and there's plenty of room for extra stuff. I also have a Lowepro Computrekker Plus back bag for use when flying and a Lowepro ProRoller X200 which can also be used when flying or if I want a roller. I also have a Lowepro DV4000 the times when I need a shoulder bag. The X200 can be used as a back bag also.

I need several bags to suit different situations and one case/bag can't do it all.

I really dig my F-Stop Tilopa bag. Fly with it a lot, I always break down my camera when cramming everything in there, though. But that's because I always feel the need to bring as many lenses/toys as possible.

The great thing about F-Stop bags is that they have internal aluminum frames and they are built like really nice backpacking packs. They make various sizes of ICU's (the camera inserts) and they all have adjustable velcro walls.

The bag I have:

Think Tank Airport series are insanely great. But it's probably better if you take off the handle. I have a Wooden Camera with quick release Nato Rail so it only takes 1 second, but would be a pain with the stock handle.

I think since the FS7 is so tall with the handle, it's better to have a Nato rail for quick removal, that way you have way more room in your bag for things like lenses. Plus, you can use a smaller, airport friendly bag.

The WC Nato Rail is also awesome because it has tons of mounting points. Much more useful than the stock handle.

Just keep in mind that at a certain point a big bag becomes too big to fly with and too heavy to carry (Oooh! everything fits! Let's bring it all!). My back still hurts from all those double duty stills and video days I did on the mountains 15 years ago.

Ive got mine in the Think Tank Airport Accelerator 2 with a bunch of goodies, ok for most flights... IMG_0908.jpg

I anyone using the F-Stop Shinn with their FS7? I use my Tilopa all the time and it's great as a carry-on friendly hiking pack, but if you're shooting on-the-go (or off-the-trail) breaking down and building up the camera is a huge waste of time. I'd like to hear how people are using (and traveling/flying) with the Shinn and FS7.

I am very interested in the F-Stop Shinn. Your rig remains fully assembled - http://fstopgear.com/news/2014-11/i...first-cine-camera-carry-solution#.VThIgGd--Uk

Tamrac Expedition 9x are large (Sorry if old news, haven't read your linked backpack thread) and they have 6x, 7x, and 8x if 9x is too big - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/654885-REG/Tamrac_558901_5589_Expedition_9x_Backpack.html

I am still waiting for my Shinn preorder from november 2014. Last i heard they are now coming towards Norway from the factory, but ive heard that before also.

Anyways, my F-stop Satori EXP fits the fully rigged stock FS7 perfectly. I just need to take off the rather large handle. But i think theres alot of air around the FS7. Not much room for many other lenses etc.

But i measured the FS7 and when loaded slightly on a tilt, i think it should fit into the Shinn with the handle even loaded. The Shinn i think is about 27cm deep, so fingers crossed.

F-stop bags are amazing. Im not using any other brand now that i have finally found my packs :-)

Shinn is an 80 liter pack. I cant imagine that going as a carry-on? And i would not trust airport loaders to throw around my FS7 with only the thin ICU padding as protection.

My guess, is to pack all clothing etc. into the Shinn to ship it as luggage and carry the camera barebone in a smaller pack. Then at the hotel on destination, remove clothing from the Shinn and carry assembled FS7 with the Shinn.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I mean that I use my F-Stop Tilopa as a carry-on, and I was trying to point out that you couldn't use a Shinn in the same way.

But yeah... I guess my dilemma is that I would still end up using my Tilopa in order to carry-on my sensitive gear, while checking the Shinn, and swapping packs upon arriving at my destination. It just seems a little wasteful/redundant, but I guess the major difference is that I can't work extremely quickly from the Tilopa bag, where I think I could work very quickly out of the Shinn.

F-Stop's website says they have the Shinn in stock (I'm in the US) so hopefully I could get it fast... I leave on Sept 1 for my trip.

I totally agree, I've had my Tilopa for a couple years, lots of miles hiking with it, sometimes up to 50+ lbs, and it has held up incredibly well. I'm super excited about their new material and slight redesigns on the new packs...

Aah, yes, make sense. I was just skimming through the thread.

Im really curious about how the FS7 will fit into the Shinn with the Vocas viewfinder bracket. After i found out you can not flip that down and align it with the side of the camera, im no longer sure if the viewfinder bracket is the one for me. However, if it packs into the Shinn no problems, my worries are over.
