can somebody propose a system(laptop, nle) which we can use in the field with the hvx 200 fluently for the work flow, and why we need to empty the p2 cards in an external drive if we can do the same straight to the laptop using the card slots in the laptop ?(consider a laptop 100g hdd)

also lets say that we use the newgeneration sony vaio laptops,i think the a397 model as i read it has high definition display, that means that we can see the result of our capture the same as to a high definition monitor?

i am asking this because i am planning bying some equiment till the release of hvx

I am looking forward to use my Apple Powerbook G4 together with the HVX for use in the field.

The PBG4 ist fitted with a cardbus slot, so it will be possible to insert the P2 cards from the HVX 200 into the PBG4 for copying the files recorded onto the P2 cards directly to the PBG4's hard disc. I intend to use Final Cut Pro 5 to edit these clips on my PBG4.

My PBG4 has 2 GB RAM and a 100 GB internal hard disc. Apart from that I have two external 100 GB (2.5") hard discs in Firewire 800/USB2 enclosures. Thus I should be able to transfer clips from the P2 cards via USB2 from the camera to any of these two hard discs in case the PBG4 is unavailable. Currently there is no intention to replace the 100 GB 2.5" HDs with 120 GB HDs upon availability.

I am not yet shure if it will be advisable to buy a Firestore unit for uninterrupted recording beyond the 16 minutes limit imposed by the 8GB capacity of the P2 cards at this time.

For editing, the PBG4 is connected with a 23" Cinema Display providing full HD resolution. The PBG4 features 128 GB Video RAM to be able to connect two Cinema displays at full HD resolution.

This configuration was devised to use HD for documentaries and remain as flexible as with DV.

i believe you'll still need your powerbook when capturing data to external drives unless you're using external capture devices such as firestore.

Dell has some around $1000 that include a 1920x1200 screen. As for software to run on it, I think the ideal program will be Serious Magic's DVCPRO-HD version of HD Rack. However, until they have it running and announce the hardware requirements for it, buying something now would be premature.

There's no need for an external drive if you have a laptop with you. The external drive (P2 Store) is an alternative to the laptop for quick P2-card offloading. But it's expensive, and the laptop gives you much, much more capability.

that means that we can see the result of our capture the same as to a high definition monitor?
You can see the same resolution. But saying that it's the "same" as a high-def monitor is assuming an awful lot. Sony's CineAlta monitor costs something like $34,000. No $1000 laptop is going to have a screen that compares to a $34,000 production monitor. So you will be able to see full-res on the laptop, but the screen is probably nowhere near competitive with a true HD production monitor.

I have test to edit in Premiere 6.5 with my Dell Inspiron 5150, 3.0 GHz CPU, 1024 MB Ram an 60 GB HD, 1600x1200 screen with no problem. But if I shall use it more i get a extern HD.

I don't think so according to Panny's related statements. Both Panny and Barry G. stated that it suffices to connect an external HD with a USB2 port to the camera, switch the camera into VTR mode and transfer the contect of both P2 cards without any further ado onto the external HD.

This is to differentiate, however, from recording very long clips directly onto a firestore unit which you might deem necessary in case of having to uninterruptedly record a concert, a wedding or anyhting similar that requires long recording sessions. Even long interviews come to mind in that context. When recording in such a way, you do not need P2 cards and instead record to the firestore HD directly.

Please enlighten me if I am wrong.

thanks everybody for the help
so if got it well if iwant to organise my workflow(i am sure that i am going to buy an hvx) i have to wait before buying a laptop till one can be tested with hvx and a nle(for sure they will be alot of comments in this site)

by the way now i have a pc (CPU 3.0,RAM 2 GIGA,WESTERN DIGITAL 250G, AND AVID EXPRESS PRO HD,ADRENALINE).Is this usable with hvx-hd,mostly i wonder for my graphics card .....

I think I have this right but please correct me if I am wrong.

I use a Dual G5 power mac and don't really want to invest in a laptop. I do not need the HVX for event work and will only ever be shooting shorts and features with shots no more than a few minutes and I am planning to run two P2 cards and offload to a USB2 HDD between takes (Or more likely between setups) straight from the camera.

I'm still a bit scared of Hard Drive failure wiping out my work, this will be a fear if the HDD is USB2 or in a laptop or in Panny's store. This is my only problem with the whole P2 workflow, the fear of getting back to my G5 with a blank HDD.

I am hoping there is some way to check the data is transfered before wiping the P2 card. In which case a second HDD could be used to back up this data.

If this is possible you could shoot for a while - plug in the first HDD and copy data over - then plug in second HDD and again copy Data over - when happy wipe the card. Unfortunately it sounds like you can only ever move the data from the card to the HDD (Obviously this won't be the case if using a laptop.)

I am forever moving data from my PC to a network rather than copying the data then deleting the original and loss of data is common (You'd think I'd remember to copy not move).

Does that make sense? Or have I got that wrong?

i am battling with these sames issues now - basically i think it comes down to workflow and what redundancy makes you comfortable.

We prob will capture into a laptop through to a portable usb drive - we can check it on the fly -

then every half day backup to anothe hard drive - worst case scenario - losing a day.

Finally every night back up to a dell backup tape drive for archiving just in case.

maybe overkill - but for a feature you gotta be sure..

Id love to hear other ideas though

i wrote "capture data". not transfer of backup. how can the camera capture when it's in vtr mode?
