Ok let me give you the info first, I am using a Panasonic DVX100b to live stream softball games. At the moment I am using an older Toshiba laptop, it does not meet the requirements set by the streaming host but it still streams at the lowest quality setting, it does drop the stream every once in awhile and quality is fuzzy.

So my question is can you use some kind of adapter to convert from firewire to thunderbolt so you could use a Mac Book Pro laptop. Or is there a new laptop that runs a quad core i7 processor that you can use the firewire connection with?

The DVX100 streams at only one quality -- full DV. That's all you can get from it.

As for connecting through Thunderbolt, there are no Thunderbolt/FireWire 400 adapters, but maybe it's possible to chain a Thunderbolt/FireWire 800 adapter and a FireWire 800/FireWire 400 adapter together. Then again, it may not work at all.

Chances are, you will not find an i7 laptop with a FireWire port.

There are FireWire 4pin to 9pin cables, so that would go straight into the $30 Apple FW / Thunderbolt adapter.

The bigger question is does your new Mac work with old software that still takes DV streams. I have a brand new Mac Pro at work & it is kinda a PITA working with FCP 7. Thanks Apple.

Another alternative would be to find a AV to USB converter. Blackmagic has a couple, there are tons of alternatives, just find something that works with your streaming service / software.
