Ok i have a HP Pavilion zd8290EA Notebook this has an ATI x600 Graphics card which offers a S-Video out i hook it up with my TV that has S-Video In, now i do get picture on my TV but i want to use my TV as a Video Monitor. I am using Premiere Pro, before this on my PC i had Geoforce Ti4200 128 MB card and was running Premiere 6.5 and i was getting video out of the composite and s-video. Can some one guide me as to whats wrong and why i cant get a video out of the S-Video of my laptop? i have done all i could with the display setting on the laptop & project settings in Premiere. Do i need some sort of Plug-In to do this? if so any idea as to where i can find it?

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanx

Actually, this type of video output isn't going to be useful as a monitor for a NLE like Premier Pro. For a notebook application, you would be better off trying to use either your camera or an external 1394 -> video converter (Pyro and others make a number of them).

Thanks for the info khmuse. Can you clarify a bit? I am a video newbie. I just realized that my Dell workstation does not have any video out anywhere on the system. I will be running Premier as soon as I get my copy. I, too, want to hook up an NTSC monitor for editing review. Do I need to put another card in the main CPU box?

One of the simplest solutions is to use a 1394 port on the computer connected to either your camera then to your broadcast monitor or to something like a Pyro A/V link to your broadcast monitor. Both of these solutions work great for both a desktop and laptop solution.

Thanks for the suggestions Khumse it does make sense to invest in a 1394-> video convertor as you said but my question was that i was doing it without any external convertor on my three year old Medion desktop PC, just a composite or s-video out of my Gioforce Ti4200 card and into my TV and i get a full rez display on my TV (all in real time from Premiere Timeline). So why cant i do it on a latest Laptop? it does have the S-Video out and i do see my desktop on my TV so why cant i get a full screen video out of Premiere timeline? sure there would be some sort of plug-in or seetings on the graphics card/windows/Premiere that will alow me to do just that but i just can not figure out how to do it.

I understand that this is not the best way of doing it but i am only going out to a standard 14" TV if i had an industry level 400+ Vertical line Monitor i wouldnt mind shelling extra cash on a video convertor, but all i am looking for is a larger picture on my TV so i dont have to look at a tiny picture on my Laptop.

Any one that can help? Again i may end up buyin the Pyro A/V Link as it can also be used to capture all those old tapes laying around. Whats the best price for Pyro A/V Link in Uk?

Can't help you on the UK price of the Pyro, but I will try to explain why using a "TV" type of output on any device isn't going to work. These types of outputs, regardless of being composite or Y-C (S-Video) in nature are just either a replacement for or an extension of the desktop. This is not anything close to a rendered output from a NLE. You could push your monitor window of Premiere onto the extended desk top (which would appear on your "TV" connection) but this isn't anything close (in terms of resolution or color) to what you would get from a rendered output via a 1394 connection.

Even using a decent television, perferable one with a component video input (color difference or Y-Pb-Pr) via a converter like the Pyro would get you close to what a broadcast monitor would achieve (though a bit more difficult to calibrate due to the lack of a blue only mode) and would still suffer from overscan, but a hell of a lot closer to what you will need for editing than any desktop output.

Once you start seeing the difference that this type of solution can make, you will wonder why you ever tried editing without it.

Buy one, use it, and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks again for the help Khmuse.... cool... i am off to buy a Pyro A/V Link  though i dont know where i can find it or what price :undecided lolzzz PCWORLD/Currys/Dixons/Jessops one of them should be able to order one for me if they dont have one in stock i guess.

Just to answer your svideo out question only, on the botom left of your laptop keyboard there is a "fn" key or function key... hold this down whilst pressing the F key which has a little picture of a monitor on it mine is on F5... then a list of out options should appear.. like LAPTOP MONTIOR OR LAPTOP AND EXTERNAL SOURCE OR SVIDEO. Select appropriate out and your away.. of course turn the external source on and plug svideo in, it may take a second to come to life. Hope that solves that part of your problem.
